New Tuff Wheel for a 1970 Barracuda
« on: July 25, 2013 - 01:24:39 PM »
I am shopping around for a new Tuff Wheel.

My car is a 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe and it came with the wood grain steering wheel.  In the 1990's I had the steering wheel leather wrapped and I have never been satisfied with the job the interior guy did with the wheel.

I like the look of the Tuff Wheel and am thinking about buying a leather wrapped aftermarket version.

Classic Industries has some "Aftermarket Tuff Wheel" steering wheels listed but they say that the "original Tuff Wheel hub" needs to be used to mount this wheel.  Are they referring to the "Crush can"?

I have also read that there is only minor drilling required to adapt a  Tuff Wheel to a non-Tuff Wheel crush can.

Has anyone done this mod?

Any feedback on the steering wheels out there?

There is what is advertised as the "1970 to 1976" style Tuff Wheel...what is the difference?

Do you recommend a good source?

Anyhoo...any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

Check Summitt for Grant version.
About $100, direct bolt on, even includes a new center cap.

Forgive my ignorance but what is CI???

After researching and reading posts...It appears that some of the Tuff Wheels have thicker foam than others.  I assume that is true and if so I think I will opt away from the thick foam style.

I like the "class" of leather and it looks like there are steering wheels with "satin" finish and "chrome".

One post said that the 14 inch steering wheels block the view of the instruments so I guess I'll go with the OEM 15 inch-er.

Does anyone have a chrome and leather steering wheel that they are happy with?  Did it come with the horn button and was it a strait bolt on to the OEM non-Tuff wheel crush can?  Where did you get it and how much?

(I cant believe the crush cans would be different).

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Crush cans are different in length and the tuff wheel ones do not have corregations, they are smooth.

I leather wrapped mine and then used  my rim blow center cap for a personal custom factory look.

you could use the little fish cap on your cuda.

I haven’t mounted mine yet but I really prefer the aftermarket leather tuff wheels to the original. The original I have is really hard and slippery feeling. I think it would be uncomfortable for long trips.
