Need some advice.............
« on: July 31, 2013 - 11:52:55 AM »

Things have been running good with my 73 Challenger the last few years. Here's whats going on right now. I turn the key, nothing, but it will crank right up if i bridge the posts on the starter relay with a screwdriver. I replaced the starter relay yesterday and it's still doing the same thing. Also, now my turn signals don't work.....yikes! Please advise with some details if possible, i'm a ok mechanic but not so hot with wiring....thanks

If you have an automatic transmission, I would start with your neutral safety switch.  You can run a jumper wire from your start relay to ground (I am going by memory, but I think it is a brown wire with a yellow stripe) to bypass your safety switch.  It should start with the key that way.  Careful because it will also start in gear that way.

Obviously a switch in between is not working.

Can be the ignition switch if it's old and possibly the NSS as TinCuda stated.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I have a slapstick shifter with a manual valve body as far as transmission goes, will that have a neutral safety switch? If so, where is it located?

The neutral (and back-up light) switch is screwed into the driver-side of the trans.  It has a little black rubber connector with three wires leading to it.  Sometimes the rubber connector falls off, and then the car won't start with the key.
