how do i know what tranny i have?

70 cuda 440 4 bbbl with auto trans. What tranny is that and where are the numbers?

Should be a 727. I believe there is a pad stamping along the pan gasket rail.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Look at the outline of the pan on the transmission.  There should be a "bump" on the passenger side near the fill tube.  Just enough where it won't look square ish.  It's a 727.  If it is straight in this area it's a 904.  That being said, all big block autos in the muscle car era were 727's.  Some people modify 904's for drag racing since they shift faster so depending on your cars past life you just may have one.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

there never was a big block 904 so it has to be a 727 unless it has some aftermarket bell attached to the front
