Now with the body in color I can get out of Paul's way in the paint booth and got to work putting the car together. I build a cart out of a 2x12 and a 2x8 and some dolly wheels I had laying around. Then I set the 'k' member on it and fastened the motor and transmission assembly to the cart. Next I just lowered the car over the whole works, it took about 15 minutes until it was in the car and another 5 minutes to connect the tranny cross member. I think as long as there is a lift available I will never stab another motor. No nicks, no scratches, no banged knuckles, just smooth sailing and quick.

Looking great. thanks for the update. I see you blacked out the wheel wells. Don't forget to do the same with the radiator support.

The wheel wells are actually Herculiner, it's a bed liner product that simulates undercoating. I am planning to blackout the radiator support but I need to figure out exactly what stays red and what gets black. I will also need to blackout the area on the cowl for the fresh air vent.

I know I had a factory document which shows where the spray was intented to cover but I'll have to dig that up.

After wet sanding the car and fenders we went ahead and got them painted so I could begin some reassembly while Paul continues blocking and wet sanding the panels. I'm not sure this method would work very well if this was a metallic color but since it is opaque Rallye Red we're confident it will work fine.

I can tell you from experience that my FK5 car came out funny that way. We did it to get inside the panels painted more thoroughly but in the right light you can see different shading resulting from spraying the panels separately. I think you are right though, the problem with my car was the metallic reflecting the light differently. Your opaque color should be fine.

  Yep...I've been doing them that way for almost 20 years....NEVER going to put one in from the top again !

Usually if time permits, I finish the engine assembly as much as possible. Fan, hoses, carb, air cleaner, wiring, everything !

Then you're not laying over the fenders that much later.

My next two will be K2 and B5 and there is enough metal flake in both of them that I wouldn't try it that way either. My painter seems to think the red will be okay too though.

I wish... I picked up another 70 Barracuda that was a 318 auto that I have most of what I need to clone to a 440-6 4spd it will be the vitamin 'c' car  . Then I was lucky enough to find a 1970 Coronet 500 #'s matching 383 4spd convertible that is the b5 blue. According to Galen it is 1 of 18  .

  Not really sure yet, probably the 6 pack cuda while everything is still fresh in my mind.  But then the Coronet would be fun too
