Do you have American Racing TORQUE THRUST wheels?
« on: August 18, 2013 - 10:09:11 PM »
And if you do, does your wheels have the center caps that use 5 small allen head bolts to hold it on?

And if you do, are you able to get a socket on your lug nuts without removing the center cap?

The more sniffing I do, the more I find it is a complete that isnt rare....

Apaprantly on some AP wheels with these caps, the universal caps cover part of the lug nut "recess"......just like on my new wheels.

That means that to access the lugs, I will have to undo 20 tiny screws with shallow allen heads....    :bricks1:

It doesnt sound like a big deal but I know this will deter me from checking torque like I should...this will add a lot of time onto R/R brakes etc.  Not to mention when these tiny bastards decide to gaul up in the threads or whatever it will be a royal PITA to get them out!  Or what if I blow a tire in the rain or at night........fumbling with those damn things will be a nightmare!

I love the look of the wheels.

But honestly had I known this before I bought I think i would have still kept looking.

I have been emailing back and forth with AR....they did say they DO know of the problem with 4" bolt patterns.....but "never had the complaint on 4.5" bolt patterns".

I have suggested that all they would need to do is cut a half-oval at each lug hole in the center cap so as to conform with the lug hole access recess.......they are looking into it.

I know what you mean, but I have TT 2s, and I use a breaker bar with a 1/2" drive and socket and its tight and rubs against the side of the cap, but it works.

Bummer on the allen bolts. my Current old rims are super tight to get the lugs off. I had to use a thinwall deepwell socket to get them off.

Ive been looking at 15 inch rims. I like the Vision legend rims.

I have them on my satellite, and I can get my socket on there to remove the lug nuts easy enough. It is a bit of a tight squeeze, but it does work. Most lug wrenches won't fit, but I use an impact wrench at home so a socket will fit on their, but a standard lug wrench not so much.

I had the same issue with my torq thrusts.  Tire monkeys destroyed the caps!  :stomp:

I could barely get a 3/4 non-impact deep socket on there, still rubbed, though.  IF I was to go back to AR wheels, I would "pre-clearance" the centercaps before mounting them on a mill, first.

Typical , make sure you use anti sieze on the allen screws !!
Of course this is not an issue on GM with the 4.75 bolt pattern but it is on the 4.5 bolt pattern Guess what the rims were designed for  :pullinghair:

I have Torq Thrust D's on the Roadrunner, and the center caps use small flat blade screws to hold them on.  Plus, I haven't had any issues getting the wheels on & off with the caps still on so must not be an issue with the TQ D's.

How about laser cutting some nice polished stainless units that fit and are held in place with button heads instead of flat heads.  Flat caps give it a road racer look.

Yeah, that would work except that then you break the chrome/PVD coating on them.   :pullinghair:

If you have polished wheels , that might work great.

I went for the low maintenance PVD.

I am hoping AR gets back to me with good news.

Mine came with splined lug nuts and a special socket. No issues removing and installing.

You dont have to look too close to see how my socket has "modified" the cap.
The metal is pretty soft.

Mine were tight also.   I used a thin wall 6 point 1/2" drive socket with a 16" swivel bar.  Where the locking nut went on, I used a dremel tool to relieve the cap slightly.   It all fits now, but no original tools used.

All the best ..... CHAPS

Replace the standard lug nuts with the spline drive "tuner" lug nuts shown above. The have a smaller diameter and should buy you the clearance that you need. I run them on my Summit Legend 5's (TT knock offs) because the lug hole is too small to use a standard 3/4" socket on. The spline drive socket fits great, and can be used with your standard tire tools.

Summit sells them pretty cheap...
