You could try putting a thin layer of paint onto a flat surface and then push the raised part of the gauge into it.  If you can get the right consistency it should transfer to the gauge..like an ink stamp.

I got my parts back from the powder coater.  I took the seat frames, new foam and new seat covers to the upholstery shop.  It will probably be late March or April before I get them back.

I sent in my switches to JS Restorations.  Jim worked his magic and they all look great and work again.  I just got done with the steering column so now it's time to turn my attention back to the dash assembly.

Here is what the steering column looked like when I started.












I soaked the outer column jacket, the lower steering shaft and inner tube in acid to clean them up.  I'm converting the car to manual steering so I separated the inner and outer steering shafts and replace the lower one with a longer manual piece.


I used a $12 insert bearing on the bottom of the column instead of the $85 stock style bearing.  I needed to grind 3/16" off the bottom of the inner tube and use the plastic housing from the original bearing to make it work.  It took awhile to figure it out but it's going to be an improvement for sure.

This is what it looks like with the plastic housing now acting as a bushing for the inner tube.  The actual bearing parts were removed from the original bearing and the locating tab was ground off so it would slide into the column farther.(it was also installed upside down)  The plastic supports the bottom of the inner shaft......there is a step in the plastic for the spring to sit on.......and the spring puts upward pressure on the inner shaft to keep it from rattling around.


The turn signal switch was reused but the wiring connector was replaced.  The mounting brackets were heavily pitted so they were sprayed with high build primer and sanded before being sprayed with gloss black.  The upper column pieces as well as the column jacket were sprayed with Rustoleum fine texture.  I installed a new coupler kit and painted the shaft gloss black.

The powder coater is giving me the run around on my dash frame.  He blasted it for me and was supposed to finish welding up the patch.  He said he would get it done today...we will see.  I want to get that painted and start assembling the dash.  I still need to buy an upper pad, send out the radio for an FM conversion and figure out what to do about the dash bezels.(repops are very expensive and I hear they don't fit very well)

I received my Illumin8s LED kit yesterday.  This is going to look really good.  I'm planning on running the power wire for the "white" LEDs to an ignition "RUN" wire so they will be on when ever the car is running.  I'm going to do away with the cigarette lighter on the dash and install another stock toggle switch and bezel.....so I can turn the lights off if I need to.

I bought two gallons of pool cleaner and added two gallons of water to it. It works faster the warmer it is. In the winter it works pretty slow.

Yes, it's marketed as a pool cleaner at Ace Hardware. I think it was $8 a gallon. I first tried it on my fasteners. I had tried to blast everything but it just took too long. I also tried a parts tumbler but didn't have much luck with heavily rusted fasteners. The acid cleaned all the fasteners quickly and easily.

Do NOT use it inside the garage. It produces a vapor that will rust other things. Only use it outside. If I had a nice compressor and a larger blast cabinet, I would use a combination of blasting and the acid. Since my compressor and blast cabinet are small, I've been using the acid for most things. It can be a pain to work with though.

There is also a home made rust dissolver recipe on Moparts. It consists of vinegar, lime juice and salt. I haven't tried it yet though.

Muriatic acid will eat aluminum very fast. If you have an aluminum part you want to clean, I had decent luck with wood bleach.(oxalic acid) I boiled some water and dissolved the powder in it. Then just soak the part. Check it often and scrub with an old toothbrush.....or you could just blast it and be done with it.  I really need a nice dedicated work space. :pullinghair:

I found out a little more past history of the Dart the other day.  I got a message from someone who wondered where I had purchased it.  He knew someone who used to own one just like it.  We messaged back and forth and figured out that it's the same car.  From what I was told, the car sat in Reno, Nevada for quite awhile.  It was purchased around 94 and brought to Iowa.  The owner installed new seat covers and then it sat in a lean-to with the top DOWN for years and years and years.  It was covered in bird poop and their was a raccoon living in the trunk.  That explains why the new seat covers were dried out and junk...why the seat frames were so rusty....why the interior smelled so bad...and why the floor is thin in places.  The previous owner apparently goes to Phoenix in the winter and won't be back for awhile.  Hopefully I can get more of the story at some point.
