The fuel filler tube has a vent line running along it which dumps down into the frame rail.  That doesn't seem very safe.  I might have to figure something else out there.
70 (71?)  Challengers did that too.  :screwy:

OK, I'll start updating this thread then.

The car is stripped except for the brake/fuel lines, leaf springs, rear end and side glass.  I'm going to wait until the car is ready to go to the body shop before removing the glass.  That way, I won't have to find a place to store it and worry about it breaking.

The interior was nasty...the worst thing about the entire car I think.  The seats had some newer Legendary seat covers on them but they needed to be replaced.  They were hard from years of sitting and everything smelled musty.  The hydraulic lines for the top were cracked and leaked fluid all over the rear floor.  I did find a couple thin spots in the floor when I was poking around.  I won't know exactly what needs replacing until the floor is blasted.

I think the car was stored with the seat backs folded forward because the seat back springs looked really rusty and the foam reeked. The top must have leaked and water just sat inside the seat backs.  I wasn't going to store those disgusting things in my house and they were taking up space in the garage, so I decided to have them refinished right away. I took the seats to the upholstery shop and had them stripped.  One of the seat back foams and one of the seat bottom foams had mice damage so I ordered a set.  The seat covers came in yesterday....the foam should be here soon.

I disassembled the bumper brackets, the replacement K-member, and the metal inner fender splash shields.  All that stuff, along with the seat frames, was taken to the local powder coater.  I should be hearing back from him any time now.  He is going to do some repairs to the seat back frames and weld up the K-member too.(box in the steering mounts exc...)

To keep the project moving forward I pulled the engine/trans out from the corner of dad's shop and ordered some parts for it.  Here it is in all its glory.  Can you tell it's been sitting awhile?  It's a MP 360 short block with 10 to 1 compression.  Home ported and polished heads with 1.88in 1.60ex valves.  The trans is a 904 I rebuilt in the late 90's with a TF-2 shift kit and a 3500 stall 10" Hughes convertor.  This should do a good job at moving around the Dart.  My 82 Cordoba went 12.71 at 106mph with it.

Here are some of the parts I bought for it...

Here I'm starting to mock things up before tearing everything apart.  I want to modify all the linkages now, so I don't have to be messing around with that stuff when the engine is nice and shiny.

I also bought an Edelbrock 650 Thunder series carb for it.  Then I ran into a snag.  While figuring out where I needed to modify the shifter bracket and kickdown rods, I noticed that the secondaries weren't opening all the way.  They were hitting the intake.  On closer inspection, the intake opening looked like it had shifted to one side while being cast.  I sent the intake and carb to the warranty department at Edelbrock.  They looked at it and ended up sending me a new intake.  The new intake and carb just got here this week.  I test fit the carb onto the new intake and everything clears.  I've moved on to other things so I'll have to get back on this at some point.

I'm still trying to decide on what I want the engine to look like.  I know I'm not going to go with orange.  I want something different.  I saw this posted on Moparts and really like it.  Red is the correct color for 68 small blocks so I might go this route.  I still don't know if I want to leave the intake natural though.  I thought about just painting the block and heads...then leaving the intake, timing cover and water pump natural.  I still need to see some pics so I can make up my mind.  The other option was spraying everything with an aluminum colored paint. :dunno:

Thanks for the updates! :2thumbs:

Okay, I'm going to show my ignorance here ... those valve covers look really slick, and I see them in that photo of the other car too, but I have never seen them before ... who makes them?
Cheers!

Quite a few places make them.  Just search for "fabricated aluminum valve covers".  Apparently, you have to spend a huge amount of money to get quality ones.  Mine were $100 and I'm not impressed.  One of covers had a flat mounting flange.  The other did not.  I was sent a replacement "really nice and straight" cover that was worse then the first one.  I put a belt sander to the first cover and made it flat...I sent back the replacement.

There used to be a guy who made aluminum spacer plates for BB and SB so you could use stock covers with tall aftermarket rockers.  He no longer makes them though.  I need a set to space these covers up and away from the intake.  I have very little clearance using two gaskets.  I'd like a little extra room there.

That's a picture that was posted on Moparts of a 68 Dart engine compartment.  I'm not sure whose it is.

I really wasn't wanting another car that needed this much work.  I wanted something that I could put the 360 in and drive. At least it's keeping me occupied.  It will be fun to drive when it's done though.  I've been working on all the smaller components since it will be awhile until the bodywork can be started.  My blast cabinet has seen better days.  It needs new seals and plexiglass in order to be used again.  My compressor isn't big enough to run it either.  It was more of a pain than anything when I used it on the Challenger.  I've been using a couple different kinds of acid to clean up the small parts.(along with EvapoRust)  It does a good job.

I cleaned up most of the zinc plated fasteners with the acid and then a light polish in the tumbler.
