Paint
« on: August 22, 2013 - 07:19:50 PM »
Just wondering about paint in the engine compartment, I know for Mopars it looks better with the engine bay the same color. Does anyone know how much more I would have to pay or an idea when it comes for the shop taking the engine out and then putting it back together after body and paint. Is it a huge price difference? Hope the question makes sense. :aarg:

I would think that by the time the shop drops the k frame assy. and removes all of the extra parts
in the engine compartment, and degreases, preps it for paint, you would add another 30-40 hours onto the job.
And body color is the only way to go for an engine compartment in an older mopar.  :smilielol:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

If you go through the hassle of doing all the engine compartment stripping, sanding, and painting, you should first weld in the lower radiator support and US Cartool upper shock tower to firewall braces.  It all gets covered up by the fenders anyway.  It will add a bunch more time and expense though to repair the welding fall through on the inner fenders.

A lot of this has to do with the type of car. Most have the bay painted the body color. I think the TAs are black (not sure about this one). The engine color 1970 was hemi orange and the 72-74 were blue. Not fully up on it all and I'm sure someone with all the details will jump in here.

Tell us what the car is and you will get better information.

Car is 72 challenger. Looks to be top banana color. Car and engine compartment is the same color as of now. I would just hate to paint the car and leave the crummu paint in engine bay. Ill probably do it all together so it is correct. I was just wondering how much more money it wohld cost me.

I would say that you should pull the motor out power wash and sand the engine compartment and that will save you a lot of money. I know just to have a cheap respray its $500. What kind of budget are you working with? It could easily be 5-8k I would guess to have a good shop do the work.

I been qouted 5 to 10k. The 10k one wouldnt even replace the whole trunk pan just half. Not looking for show quality but also not wanting a bad one either. My budget was 5k but I dont know now. There is a shop coming out soon hopefully soon to give me a quote. So we will see.

You could save yourself a lot of dough if there was anyway you could do the prepwork, and then just have them spray it.  Wouldn't cost much other than time.  And of course, you could always try your hand at painting the bay yourself if you had the equipment.  It's a good place to start because you don't have to be THAT perfect. But I don't know how that could be done without you having to take the engine out  :dunno: Good luck!

You can do a fairly decent job of painting the engine bay without taking the engine out. I did a `74 road runner from dark green to `71 Sassy Grass Green and you really had to look way down low to notice. It was fine for a low dollar driver.

This is a really good website to check out if you decide to do it yourself. Engine in or out.
I learned alot from here.
