I have a friend who raises quarter horses, he has said, "how do you make a small fortune raising horses .... start with a large fortune!".

Seems there are lots of 'hobbies' to lose money on, but that's why they're hobbies and not businesses.

I look at my own car, what's a base model 1974 Challenger going for? not a whole lot. When I do restore the car what's it going to be worth...way less then the cost of restoration.

I do it for a few things:

1. Pride of ownership.
2. The experience of restoring it
3. Because I chose this car and I am commited to keeping it out of the crusher.

Actually I have a strong passion for restoration...Haven't really made "mega $$$" ever doing my own cars...

Hmmm. From the first pic I thought it was rough, more or less together, but didn't realize it was quite that 'used up'.
I really want a Charger, but I better start with something a little more complete. Appreciate your taking the time to take a pic or two.

That thing was a pile-o-crap right from the start. There were some guys on D-C that thought I should restore it.      I look at cars all day everyday for over 30 years. That car was NEVER a resto candidate, not in my world. Look close there's chains running around it (1st pic) those chains also held a 460 ford block to the floor. The inside of the car looked like an episode on Hoarders! A 318/904/smallest rear end possible/rotten POS. Although it did have a forged crank 340 in it. It lives on through many others, there's still good pieces on it depending what a guy would be looking for. This year @ the chicagoland mopar show in Belvidere a guy came up to me that bought the hood, like maybe 5 years ago. I'm not a motivated seller, I just do my MOPAR parts as a little diversion from the day to day stuff we sell. Maybe you saw my post on the 70 Charger I just acquired. That cars not a resto candidate either. But has some great parts (if you know where to look) to get others back on the road.  Like I said ... parts is what I do...  Check the links in my signature for the day-to-day...

I'm looking for a pretty ragged out 68-70 Charger to build the way I've always wanted. More 80s hot rod. Finding one for a decent price is really hard in my neck of the woods.

Saw a couple of 70's chargers at the last good guys show. One was painted (not that great either for a black paint job) for 20k 383 auto, the other I believe was around 15 and had some rust issues.

It was weird the black one almost looked like he shot it and never did any wet sanding. Hard to sell a car like that I guess but he wanted out.

So all things being the same this is a good topic. If you didnt have to part hunt. You bought a rusty POS but had all the parts there. There wouldnt be a big difference in price of restoration if it was a 76 dart 6 cyl or a 69 Daytona Charger hemi. 

A Paint job is a paint job, interior parts are mostly the same, they all have the same transmission, rear end, and many other parts are the same. What gets expensive is if you have to get the specialty parts that are unique to a hemi car, aero ect.

so if you were going to restore a car I'd be looking for the most complete car available to keep costs down.

You're forgetting the entry level price, and unfortunately that's why a lot of cool cars are NOT getting restored. The current owners think they're sitting on a gold mine and ask ridiculous prices.
It cost way more to buy a project AAR Cuda then it does a /6 Barracuda, but like you said, the restoration costs pretty much the same.

That's the truth.  The nuts, bolts and paint don't care what car it's put on.  Same cost.
