Is it time to sell everytyhing?
« on: August 25, 2013 - 07:38:53 AM »
A few years back I started thinking about the day when I would be too old to work on my old Mopars and I`d sell everything and maybe buy A Viper, I just didn`t think it would be this soon. I have begun to think a lot about it recently due to a number or things and figured I`d get everyones thoughts about it as I`m sure there are some others getting old like me. For me there a number of factors-at 54 some days I feel like 84 with constant pain due to my bad back which causes headaches, arthritis, bad knees and numerous other old injuries. Financially I`m paying the bills but just barely and have no extra money for the cars. I used to work long hours doing side jobs for spending money but now I`m lucky to struggle thru 8-9 hours at my job. I find now even when I have the time I find it hard to get motivated to work out in the garage on something and not sure why as I still have a real passion for the cars. I`m not posting this looking for sympathy or having a pity party as it`s only stuff but it would be a big change for me. My options are selling everything and buying a used Viper or newer Challenger which I`m sure I could have fun with but it just wouldn`t be the same. The other option is keeping one of the cars and selling the rest to free up some money and have less projects to deal with.  :dunno:

You're the only guy that can answer that question lol. I'd say drive your chally down to the dodge dealership to test drive a new chally, see which ride you enjoy the most. Same answer for a used viper, if you can find one close by.

Well the market for selling cars is the pits right now but I am not sure it will imporve anytime soon either . I have no had a single decent offer on my Charger even at 40% of the $$ invested to restore it for example . I guess I am lucky , I am the same age as you & have no pain or mobility issues so it is far from my time to give it up thankfully . I too have always wanted a Viper & there are some good deals on them , personally I would never want a roadster only a GTS & getting in & out of them may be very difficult for you as well . The new challs are awesome cars , nothing like the older cars but far nicer to drive IMO so that may be a great option for you .
You will have to decide what is right for you !!

I agree. Drive your challenger there. Hop out of it in the middle of the dealership lot. I bet on both the drive there and actually on the lot, more people will notice your classic challenger over a new one.

Remember, nearly anyone can go buy a new challenger. How many people have the passion and ability to drive the original version?

Well- I have `cuda not a lowly Challenger!   :smilielol: :stirpot: With the market the way it is I`d be lucky to get half the $20k+ I have into my Barracuda and the road runner is a project so that may be a tough sell for the money I have into it also. If I do sell everything I might have $18-20k which is at least enough so I could finance the rest to buy a Viper newer(but probably used) Challenger.

Boy talk about scarey . I am also 54 and all kinds of aches and pains . I often wonder if it is time to start selling things down . Not so much for me but so the wife does not have to deal with everything when I check out .There is little doubt I will go first barring a accident , she takes care of herself and I will not get into myself except I do not have high hopes .I'm not selling my Challenger yet for sure or the house I live in but have consider just about everything else . I know this topic is about you and not me but my point is you are not alone . In my case I'm not ready to accept the end yet and figure I'll know when so as others have said you're the only one who knows when . Good luck and don't give up too soon .

I figured I`m, not the only one so input from anyone in the same situation may help with my decision.  :2thumbs:

and ya, I don`t want to give up too soon and then regret it.

Wow Jeff, I'm shocked!  :o  I would have never guessed your 54!  I thought 30 something!  If it were me...I'd keep your favorite and  sell the rest in time. Seeing as it's not a "fire sale" you can figure a price then hold till you get it?
I'll have to start bugging you about the road runner like I do with Bigs then!  :stirpot:
I  always thought in the back of my mind that I'd really like a Viper too!  :2thumbs: I "feel your pain"  :grinyes:
Unless something drastic happens though.... it's not going to happen as I only have room and finances for one car.
A few years ago I sold my BB Buick and 55 Belair and dumped the proceeds into the challenger. I never regretted that decision . Paying for insurance, storage, maintenance, etc  was a real downer , especially when I really only drove the Challenger anyway. ( my first love!)

I would scale back to only 1 car.  Too many projects and parts can drain your enthusiasm.
Whatever you do, keep the old Challenger (or a lowly Cuda :) ) or get a Viper.  You want something unique to keep your attention.

You can get a newer Challenger anytime in the next 10-15yrs.

Well I know exactly how you feel. I’m 60 and I’m slow, sore and it’s getting really hard to get up off that floor. What I have done is find a mechanic that can help me with my Challenger. I am making it into a very comfortable and drivable car: ac, new suspension, new brakes, etc. That’s how I dealt with it. If it brakes I can fix it myself or Mark will help me out. Just didn’t want to give up the feel of the classic yet.

You, however, should do what you need and want to do. It’s all about what is best for you right now.

I'm 54 now and just a few years ago was having some physical issues that kept me from enjoying working on my car so I've let it sit. While those issues have past for the most part other things have kept me from getting back into working regularly on cars, I figure the Challey has waited this long another year or two will make little difference. Finances are not holding me back at this time, just so many other things that need attention.
Anyways it sounds like your contemplating jumping from a small money pit into a big money pit if selling what you have now only gets you a down payment. And consider this, anything that goes wrong with those newer models is probably something you would not be able to handle technically or physically so it would just mean more money to keep them going.
Simplifying by reducing your collection may very well be something to consider, you just have to determine what's important to you. Having just bought a new Challenger and while I do like the car it is no substitute for the real thing. I'm holding on to a '98 GT for my daily commute & I really enjoy driving it, was gonna sell it but for no more than it would bring and as solid a car it has been it's worth the little extra expense to keep miles and wear off the new car.
Have you looked into what's got ya down? A little lifestyle change has made a huge difference in how I feel.  Lost a little weight by eating better, started getting some of the right kind of exercise and i feel better than I have in 10+yrs.  :2cents:

One more thing, it’s about the fellowship of the E-body (the way it is here on cc.com) and the classic car owner in general. I’m lucky in that there is a huge classic car presence where I live (Kissimmee/Orlando area). There is a Challengers only club here, classic car clubs and my favorite, the Old Town Cruise. It happens every Saturday nigh 52 weeks a year and it is a great place to hang out with other car people and have a beer:

Here is a link and there are a lot of videos on youtube:

Just something to think about.

Great advice, I lost 40lbs over the last year, down to 170 and have never felt better.
Just did my 1st Mud Run with my daughter yesterday.

Torred, if it were me, I'd keep just one car to work on. I don't know how many you have, but more than one requires spreading around a lot of $ to make progress on all of them let alone a ton of time. And I agree with bullit, a new car will generate a monthly bill making dollars a little tighter. The 'cuda only takes up garage space. You spend $ on it when $ are available. :2cents:
