Didn't know that there were so many 54 year olds here. I'll be 54 in less than 2 months. No pains, no problems, worried about the economy and the future job situation so we paid off the house.  I always worried about the house, so I've never had a new car ever and made extra house payments.

I worry about my wife having to get rid of my extra stuff too If I suddenly had an accident or suddenly diagnosed with something like what is going on with my little brother.

When my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic-liver cancer in 06 then was gone within 3 months, I decided to start doing more car stuff and stop putting things off. I drove to Carlisle, Power tour, Woodward Dream cruise, stuff I always said were things for the future. I threw together a Pace Car, which I always dreamed of. I just took my Cuda back after being in a friends garage for 7-1/2 years last Wed, and dropped it off at Maaco for a $499 paint job on Friday, so my wife can drive it. No high dollar restos for us. Can't afford it.

Life is short, if you want a Viper, get your Viper

VIPER?? Funny I was web browsing Vipers last weekend - 'Cuda would have to go and I just don't think that is happening yet. I am only almost 43 so by the time I hit mid-late life crisis I should be able to afford the Viper and a bigger garage

Wow all these 54 sumthins! In conversation last week I said "almost 60"   then afterwords I thought to myself ALMOST 6O  :22yikes:  :faint:  :villagers: What the hell happened here???? Sometimes I think I have too much crap (forget it Brad!) but the hustler in me keeps me going. We paid off our house years ago, which has freed up cash for lots of other things. Look at your financial security, once you got a handle on things go for your dreams!! If your health is decent (I did not say good) that's a BIG part of the mix. I have a few aliments but who wants to hear about that. Get out there and have some fun.  :burnout:

Great thread, and at 54 very age appropriate for what's happening in my life, too.  Fell at home about 3 months ago and hurt my back, haven't touched the cars or ridden my bikes all summer as my back has been getting slowly better.  Finally couldn't wait any longer and went to the spine doctor and a few xrays later found out I have degenerative arthritis in my back & hips.  I'm sure I have it elsewhere as well but that's all that the xrays included.  So with two projects and two bikes sitting in the garage untouched all summer I'm asking myself the same question, is it time to just change gears and get something I can drive & enjoy right now before I get any older.  Also, we're starting to try to downsize in preperation for moving to a smaller one story house we can afford to retire in, and two car garages are about as much as these 'retirement community' houses come with.  Not sure where I'm going right now, just wanted to say I'm kind of there myself, looking at the same options and trying to decide if its time to go a different way.

Jeff,

I didn't realize you were 54 years old.   :grinno:

Maybe it's your young GF that's wearing you out.   :poopoke:

To be serious, I was rolling around on the cement earlier this year changing my shocks. I started to wondered why I was doing it? I mean, I was beat up, it wasn't fun....
I always thought I would keep my 70 until I retire and have the time to really work on it, but I think by then, putting gas in the tank will be about all I can handle.

So I've had thoughts about selling my 70...And the new Challengers are a lot of fun to drive.

Great thread!
Im mid 50s myself, and though I dont have any chronic pains, I have noticed its harder to crawl around and do physical stuff lately. But, Im also a contractor and find myself doing more physical work than most my age, including lots of yard work that can sometimes totally exhaust me.
I could stand to lose 20 pounds. I know I would feel a LOT better if I did, so thats my goal for the next few years. Start eating a little better.
As far as selling everything? No way for me. I have my daily driver pickup, plus the cuda which gets started up maybe once a week for 5-10 minutes, and driven maybe once or twice a month, especially when the weather is good, and then I have a turbo stealth, which also doesnt get driven much. I have been thinking of selling it to purchase another classic muscle car convertible. Maybe. :burnout:
I do think it might help you to get down to just one "extra" car that you love the most, and stick with it as long as you can. It may just inspire you to stay a little more active. I also would love a viper, but the few people at shows I have mentioned that to all said the same thing. "Dont do that! Viper owners are all a$$holes."  :stirpot:
hehe
They are about the coolest (relatively affordable) sports muscle you can buy, but you can almost forget working on them. If and when things break you can be assured of one thing. Parts are  :money: :money: and most of the more reasonably priced gen1 and gen2 stuff out there have to be looked over VERY carefully for prior accident damage.
Theyre also hard to get in and out of if that sort of thing might become a problem for you in a few years. For me, my stealth is one of those cars I practically have to put on, and vipers are even worse.
Think on it, and dont make any rash decisions. No fire sales needed.

Jeff,

I had no idea you were 54 either.  When I met you for last year's Carlisle trip, I was convinced you were in your mid to late 30's and your girlfriend was a bit younger.

So from that standpoint, you have a lot going for you.  I turned 50 last year, and it seems like every decade brings a new set of aches and pains.

You just bought that house and put up a nice garage to allow you to work on your projects.  Would seem a shame to miss the opportunity to use it.

I bought the new Challenger, and it's a blast to drive, and I think that car gets as much attention as the 70.  But the people who want to talk about the 70 are more sincere.

I echo the previous suggestions to keep one car - maybe the Barracuda and scale back your projects and your parts.  Although, if you have your heart set on a Viper - who can argue with that dream?

Maybe a 29 year old is too much for me!   I don`t look or act my age but I`m feeling it lately.

Have you looked into what's got ya down? A little lifestyle change has made a huge difference in how I feel.  Lost a little weight by eating better, started getting some of the right kind of exercise and i feel better than I have in 10+yrs.  :2cents:

At 6' 155lbs I`m by no means overweight and never smoked cigs. The aches and pains I could deal with but it`s the back that really drags me down as anyone who`s had back problems knows it affects everything you do 24/7. I do have a DRs appointment for a general physical and will see what can be done for me but there`s no cure for getting old!

Jeff,

I share your agony somewhat. I used to have lower back pain, but the last 6 months that has gone away, only to be replaced by mid-back pain. This is a different kind of pain now because it's muscle related.  UGH!

Back problems are exactly what took me down about 6-years ago then a couple of years ago I started exercising & that's become almost a non issue. Not that every case can be that simple but most back issues can be helped with the correct treatment.
GF is a whole nother issue....sorry no PSY degree  :poopoke:

Interesting thread...I feel like the old guy here 61 in 3 months.  I think my cars help me to keep feeling young.  Bought my first mopar in 1973, a new Duster.  Tried to replace it a few years ago but had to settle for a 74 Dart Sport, it seems that Dusters are a lot more money.  Had my 70 Challenger since the mid 80's unrestored RT/SE Vcode.  Many times thought of selling, I drive it less than 50 miles a year.  But it would seem like giving up my first born as they say.  There is also the fact that I would never be able to afford another.  Tough decision, I would think long and hard before pulling the pin.

Have to agree, "Life is Short"  If you want the Viper/Challenger get it!!!  I bought the 74 Dart with the idea of selling my Challenger to pay for it, but when push came to shove, decided to keep them both and never regretted it.  :2thumbs:

It won`t be a quick decision but I`m definitely giving it some serious thought lately. I hope to get the heater installed and garage insulated before winter so I can work out there and we`ll see how it goes as winter really makes me ache. Must be b/c I`m all skin and bones-no natural insulation!  The Viper would be what I really want and since it would be garaged and only driven a couple thousand miles a year I don`t think maintenance would be too bad. A newer Challenger would be the more practical choice as it would do DD duty which would save me in fuel as the only DD I have now is my truck at 12 miles a gallon.  :eek4:

Would you DD the Challenger in the winter, or use the truck?  I've come to depend on Front Wheel Drive in the winter compared to rear wheel drive.  I don't plan on driving the new RT in the snow.  But plan on driving it on dry winter days.  So I figure I'll get to drive it about 50% of the time from December to March.

4WD truck with plow for that horrible white crap!  :smilielol: Challenger would see only nicer days in the winter, otherwise it could stay in the warm garage.
