Boy I Feel Stupid........
« on: August 26, 2013 - 10:38:38 AM »
Well, I'll go ahead and let y'all know how stupid I was a few weekends ago. First of all, I have had this Cuda for 8 years. The hood and decklid are fiberglass and they clip on with dzus fasteners. Well, I knew that one day I would forget to pin the hood down and drive away. I did just that on the 3rd of this month. It flew off going down the road. Fortunately it didn't touch the windshield or the top of the car. It pretty much went straight up. My buddies behind me said it went about 25-30 feet up in the air. It landed right in the middle of a busy 4 lane highway. Gladly, no one ran over it and we collected it and I pinned it down and went on home. It has been in the body shop for repairs and paint since then. It is supposed to be coming back home today. It actually looks better than before. Anyway, I just wanted to fess up to my stupidity.   :misbehaving: I think that after a $600.00 repair bill, I hope I am smart enough to not do that again.....   :money:

OMG I can just imagine the shock and feeling of CRAP I forgot to clip it down as you watch that thing fly over the car!  Would of been a cool video if your buddies had a dash cam . . .

Glad it is getting fixed up!

You're not the first, and won't be the last.  When I first put the T/A hood (1970 hood latch) onto my 72 (completely different hood latch) I needed hood pins to keep it closed.  Well one day was spent tinkering and tuning where I went for a short ride, came home and adjusted and went for another ride.  For the sake of ease (and laziness) I only put 1 hood pin in.  I was only going for quick rides, 25 mph or so.  One time, I forgot the one pin, went for a ride, and discovered the hood gains lift just like an airplane wing at 25 mph.  Thankfully it was still connected to the hinges.  This kept the hood on the car, but also cracked and broke the main support structure underneath.  Thankfully it was slow enough that I slammed on the brakes before it cracked the hood fully in half.  I got lucky with no cosmetic damage on the outside and the hood still looks kinda normal when shut if I push down on the sides.  Yet another thing to be fixed properly this winter.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

It's ok. I went for a test drive once and forgot to torque the lug nuts. Not pretty.

You have pins in the back? I'd put them in a visible place. Tucked behind the wipers against the windshield or something?

I do stupid as well as anyone, I'm just glad I've survived mostly undamaged so far!  Seriously, it could have been so much worse you probably ought to feel a little lucky.

A guy I know did the same thing in his '69.5 Super Bee.  Forgot the pins, hood went up and he saw it land from his rear view mirror.  Live and learn.
