I'm really surprised by the results.

So, where do you keep your buildsheet?  Isn't that kinda like a fender tag and shouldn't it go back in the car too?  Much less likely someone would steal a buildsheet when it's behind the seat, but I'm guessing not many of us keep the buildsheet in the car.  Why not?  Why not at least a photo copy it?

I like that  :thinkerg: photo copy of build sheet for car. I'm on it.
Fortunate to have tags for both cars and built sheet.
My VIN tags are on both cars.

Mine's on the fender.

I was figuring that no one would want to steal my tag but unless maybe they are missing a tag for a '72, then potentially someone MIGHT want mine....maybe...maybe not....I dunno.

Build sheet in a folder with other documents original to the car.

When I bought my car, the fender tag was missing in action. I just figured it was taken off during the repaint and possibly lost. My car was originally a base Challenger with a 383, so nothing real rare there. I did have a fender tag made up though.

    http://www.datatags.com/

My car is an L.A. built car, so no build sheet.

Posted this before in a different thread that I had one made for mine as well.  No build sheet either.  It was a 383 'cuda with a 440 in it now, so obvious it is modified.  New tag references the 383 to match the VIN and not try to hide the engine mod, but other codes reflect how the car sits today.  For the born-on-date and order number fields, I put my birth date 0731 001958!

This is irrelevant to the thread but I got to ask ... is that the same car in both your "1980" and "2008" pics in your signature block?? Just curious that's all. Please continue with the main topic of the thread ...

Yep, same car.

My build-sheet is kept with all the other documents for my car, in a folder in acid free liner, as suggested by Barry, such as the pink slip, owners sales receipt, add when I found my car and even the name of the previous owners, and the direction to the person house I bought it from.
As Cody said, I plan on putting photo copies of the build-sheets back into the car, behind the rear seat, in the front seat back, above the glove box, but not under the carpet.  When or if I ever sell my car the new owner will get all of the documentation I have.

i keep mine off of the car because with my first challenger someone stole the tag and then when the car got in an accident the insurance company came out and said that they werent going to give me anything for the car without the fender tag being on it. After lots of fighting i finally got 1200 out of them but that was a fight.

The tag for my T/A is on the car. I do have nylon lock nuts on long screws to keep it there.

I've come to the conclusion that my fender tag must be in the Smithsonian Archives as an example of the only JS27V2B car around.  :poopoke:

I kid, I kid.  All the sheet metal in front of the windshield and doors including the fender tag was missing when I bought the car.  I'm not upset about it since it is a 318/904 car with it's only option being A/C.  The tag would not add any value.  I toyed with the idea of making one to match the car when it's done, since no one in their right mind would believe it's a legit factory combination.

I've been thinking about the same thing. Just today I thought about a line reading:

There was a 71 hemi cuda convertible clone I saw this summer that had a fender tag that read something like "galen govier certified that nothing on this car is original"
I should put retaining nuts on my cars tags. You hear stories of tags being stolen at shows, I always wonder if these stories are urban myths, but it isn't worth taking a chance as both my cars are rare and neither have their broadcast sheet.

I saw that 'cuda at Mopars in the Park show earlier this year. He told me what the car was appraised at and I gave him kind of a funny look at the relatively low number. He smiled and said "check out the fender tags". That's when I saw the tag that read "Galen Govier certifies that this car contains not one matching number" :smilielol:

This is old but I figured I would ask. What do you guys do when it's time to paint the car? Do you leave the tag the original colour if it's being repainted the same colour. Or do you get it re painted? It seems like most people keep the tags on the car!

Personally I would take the tag off so there is fresh paint laid down where the tag goes. Then paint the tag with the same paint. Month or two later, reinstall the tag. :2cents:

What does Datatags charge to make a tag?
Checked their website but it said to send email for quote, someone here must have got one?
