Camshaft recomendations - I'm confused...
« on: August 27, 2013 - 09:30:21 PM »
I am looking for a camshaft to suit my new build. I am building a 340 stroker (416) and have a forged rotating assembly and plenty of other parts ready to go. The car will be a weekend cruiser and probably never see the drag strip. I still want plenty of grunt on tap and a bit of lumpy cam sound, but not a pig that won’t idle and is a pain to warm up.

I would like any feedback to what has been recommended by Comp as I can’t afford to do it twice...

So here is the relevant info – 4” stroke, Edelbrock Performer heads (compression should come out to about 10.5:1), Comp roller lifters, Harland Sharp rockers,  TTI headers & 3” system, MP 6 pack manifold & Holley 6 pack carbs (Small Block for now), TKO manual box, 3.23 rear end.

I asked Comp to recommend a cam based on their questionnaire and got this:

“I recommend going with cam 20-812-9. This cam will have the choppy idle you are wanting and will give you strong low end power in your setup. The cam has duration @ .050 of 230 236 with valve lift of .577 .573. The cam will run up to about 5500 rpm with your stroked setup and start to pull about 1800 rpm or so. Possibly a little sooner. This will also have good street manners and run real strong for you”.

Cam specs at - http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=647&sb=2

I have read some of the (numerous) threads on cam choice on the forums and just when I think you have my head around it, I read another conflicting view.

What alarms me most about this suggestion is the cam is to suit a 273-360 c.i. engine. Mine will be 416 - so I’ve got alarm bells ringing immediately, let alone considering any other lift and duration specs.

Also the stated power range is 2200-6000 rpm which is way above where I would want the power to start and end…

Is this a suitable cam for my application and use? Any feedback welcome.

The more CID you build the more camshaft it can use.

"with your stroked setup and start to pull about 1800 rpm "
"Also the stated power range is 2200-6000 rpm"

I used a Lunati Hyd roller and am very happy with it!

well, if you got the money, use a roller.
There are smart people on this site, but the cam manufacturer tech reps should
be given high regard. They saved my bacon by telling me the cam I was gonna use
had to much duration for my compression ratio, and would bleed cylinder pressure.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

and the top end power will be at a lower rpm as well...

Personally I have not figured out how Comp got everyone to forget about any other mfg of cams , most comps are based on snall block Chev for Mopars , I would look at a Lunati Voodoo series cam  or hyd roller they are designed for the wider lifter & longer con rod Mopar has

They out advertise everyone else, they sponsor like mad....and they are everywhere....

We used to consider them junk long ago but they hung in there, bought other companies out, came up with new names, talked up asymmetrical lobes, etc.

I like the Lunatis myself

Thanks. I might give Lunati a try and see what they recommend.

True, remember back when Comp and BFG where the Super Shops darlings and on the radio 20 times a day. I can remember even the chevy guys calling them junk back then.

Comp certainly isn't the only cam co. out there, but I have used three of their cams. The first was a very mild High Energy grind and it was OK, but nothing special either. The last two have both worked quite well. The most recent one is a High Lift Mopar specific [ .904 lifter only ] nitrided EXT Energy 285/297 flat tappet hyd. grind. It has slightly more duration at .050 [ 241/247 vs. 230/236 ] and  even a bit more at .200 [159/161 vs. 154/158 ] as the hyd. roller you listed.  Lift is .546/.546 with 1.5 rockers, .582/.582 with 1.6's. The engine in my '72 Cuda is smaller than yours, .030 360 and has slightly less static compression, 9.7:1. I have near stock Indybrock heads and like you a five speed Tremec. I have 3:55 gears in back so pretty close to yours. The engine pulls hard from right off idle to 6,600 when it hits the rev limiter. I am not sure just how high it would go otherwise. I shift at 6,200. Basically with 416 cubes and the really low 1 st. gear in the Tremec you won't have to worry about it being doggy at low speed. I have fairly sticky 245x45x17 high performance summer tires and I can't use full throttle in first gear without blowing the tires off, whether at a dead stop or from 25mph roll. Other cams you may want to look at are Bullet, Lunatti and Racer Brown. I think Crane may be back in business as well. Good luck, you should have a really good running car.
