These are good thoughts here. I strongly advise you to check the other side. I Also agree that it wouldn't last 2 years (under normal conditions). Now I put on 1000-1200 miles a year..................................................................... even so improperly torqued bearings can HEAT UP very quickly  :grinyes:

Those rotors with the cutouts always scared me?( same style on vintage Mustangs) Looks like it broke the center out of the rotor. If it was a solid rotor maybe the wheel wouldn't have broke off and the rotor/caliper would have held the wheel on till you could pull over?

The retaining nut was tightened but not backed off for bearing  tolerance. Free spin.
Picture shows retaining nut and washer melted to nut. Bearings disintegrated.

I've seen rotors break of hubs before ( when they were really thin) but never lost a hub off the spindle.......  :clueless:

Same here, at the race track. China crap would break, but the wheel wouldn't come off the caliper would hold it on. North American rotors seemed to be fine. I even noticed a difference machining them for bigger studs, the China crap would flake off and the North Americans would produce a good chip.
 The one here looks to have blown apart, no rotor left?

Wow, lots of insight here, and thanks everyone for the concerns!

The car is currently 50 miles away as I had to get back home to work the same evening. I'll properly inspect the other side when I get it back home to my preferred shop, I guess that should clear up whether the retaining washer was left out, ball bearings were used or the nut was over-tightened.

A wrongly tightened nut sounds plausible to me, and that's what the mechanic's first instinct was as well. I put a little over 2,000 miles on the car in 2 years, not sure how many mile the previous owner put on after putting in disk brakes.

I don't have any radio in, it was only the motor we were listening to! We drove down from Maine over some curvy routes (route 3) and then onto I 93, but just smooth sailing. The brakes felt a little weird at a toll station a couple miles up as I remember now, then on the highway I think I told my buddy I heard something once or twice, before I definitely heard a clunk that made me start to pull over, right before the wheel decided to have its own way.

Boah, nice input with the fender. The mechanic gave me a blank stare when I asked him about fixing the fender, I hope he doesn't do more damage to it when bending it so the wheel will fit. For the alignment, I had new wheels and always a slight left-pull, so this sounded to be the perfect opportunity. However the guy suggested to replace the left-side pitman arm first (because it was loose), but said it's still okay to drive around, just something to do rather sooner than later. He called me today that the part had arrived...

That should be the kit, exactly! Haven't recovered the rotor, only what's in the images.

Definitely want to back off the retaining nut (wheel turns freely) so the bearings don't self destruct which it looks like here.

Your going to need a spindle as that one will be scrap.  If this were my car I'd put  E-Body disc brake spindles on it now to avoid those rotors ( but that's just me)

...or maybe the tire came off the rotor and the rotor skidding along the asphalt caused the components to disintegrate and fly all over the place and the "after" pictures we're seeing is all the recovered pieces that are left.

The opinion below sounds like the most likely candidate for what happened.

This is not that schocking. I farm and I've seen it more than once. If the nut is not tensioned properly when it's install the bearing won't last nearly as long as it should. Almost certainly it was a taper roller bearing. If the pressure (tightness of nut)isn't right then in time the rollers will chew up the cage that holds them in place and eveything comes undone. Last fall i had a wagon wheel come off on the road and go through a fence and 75 yards into a field. The number of times I've seen it on farm equipment makes me wonder why we don't see it more with cars.

So weird it wasnt noisy before it blew.

Ya, pretty basic, but need to torque down the nut, and back off a quarter turn.  Maybe also not enough grease?

What gets me is the rotor coming off while getting past the disc brake caliper and not breaking/ripping it off in the process. Unless.....
The rotor shattered in the process when things were getting hot/damaged. Dunno  :clueless:
