Need help with tie rods, and steering box
« on: September 10, 2013 - 05:30:23 PM »
Ok, so afteer driving my 70 challenger I need inner and outer tie rods (rusted form sitting), an a new power steering box.
Which tie rods should I get and where do I find them.

I would like to get a better ratio power steering box than stock. 4 turns from lock to lock is a bit much. Again which one should I get and where. A direct bolt on would be great.

Thanks

The tie rod ends if you don't care not being OEM are beefed up versions on firmfeel.com.
They also offer stage 3 steering boxes.

If you can, beef the welds up where the steering box mounts. All the webs.

You could use c-body tierods and adjusters .
Moog Part#s for the 11/16 tie rod parts are
ES440S -tie rod sleeve
ES355RL -left tie rod end
ES352R - right tie rod end

For faster steering either use the fast ratio arms or the new Borgeson retrofit box.

Here is Firm Feel's web site. Great vendor! :2thumbs:

I'm using FF stage 3 P/S box and fast ratio arms and love it!

I would agree with TC and get a stage three box from firm feel, or Steer and Gear. I got mine from S&G and am happy with it.
As for tie rods, I don't think the loading on the tie rods and adjusters warrant a 'beefier' piece. I'd go with stock Moog Challenger tie rod ends.  :2cents:

I saw an article on a Borgeson conversion using a Grand Cherokee power steering box for a far better steering ratio & feel , is bolts up to the K frame & uses the same pitman arm but requires an irreversible steering shaft modification .

Just a pointer, if you go with the FF fast ratio arms it will limit the headers you can put on the car especially for BigBlocks.

Ask me how I know.....

For what its worth I installed the firm feel stage 3 steering box, the larger tie rods sleeves and such from just suspension, all poly front end parts except for lower control arms. Tubular a arms larger sway bar after market and I have a 68 440 with a a833 trans and hedmen headers with no fit issues what's so ever. Good luck with it

If I had to do it all over again I would go with the fast ratio box over getting the Fast Ratio Idler and Steering arm.

Although the headers I got you would still have to pound the number 2 tube to have it clear either steering box but you would have more options.

Wow what a pain....

Can you just go with stage 3 box or is it better to get box, fast ratio pitman and adler arm?
Does the firm feel power steering box by itself make for a faster turning.

Mopar steering boxes are all the same ratio, it's the longer arms that speed up the steering. Yes you can use just the box, it would be the same as you have now, only the box is much tighter, not the traditional Mopar slush box. If you want faster steering without the arms the borgeson box is the only way I know? Smaller steering wheel helps too.

This is why the Borgeson conversion looks good as it is a bolt in conversion with a better ratio

To install the borgeson unit it requires you to cut the steering shaft.
On their website.

If you really have to get a new box, I would go with Borgeson. I was able to get mine rebuit by Firm Feel and added the Hotchkis fast ratio arms. The Hotchkis arms are the same ratio as the AAR and TA.
