I am in the process of restoring the steering column for my AAR and I am missing the rubber grommet for the interlock mechanism . Does any one reproduce this grommet?

It's at the end coupler and you'll re build it. Inside the coupler is some tarry goopy stuff.
I'm wanting to know what others substituted it with. Perhaps Silicone?

According to what I saw on the first picture:
 the PM you sent me, the cad colored part is the reverse lock out that comes off the steering coloum. That is exclusive to 1970 E body 4 speed cars. 3 speeds I believe had them that year as well.

I have a pdf that shows hows to take the columns apart step by step. I don't remember where I found it, the guy does a great job showing how its done he paints the column green if this is the same pdf you have look at picture DSC01428 and it shows the grommet in the gold cad part. I have two columns and neither one has this part. You could also look at Alans Gallents web site, the 1st column picture will show the gold cad part. Thanks for the help.  Greg

Since were on the subject on steering columns:

I pulled my steering column can off today. Then took out the innards after.
Tried to separate the next section where the key/ignition is.

I didn't have my computer with me to look at the pdf. I have on my home computer.

Where the key goes in, the part is loose and can go around 360 degrees.
What's broken inside? Can I get a new one?

There is a snap ring on the shaft that hold the upper housing first remove the snap ring then pry the housing & brg up from the splined shaft , below that there is a steel cover on the shaft , pry that up & remove the roll pin & the lock ring will slide off the column , under that you will see 2 large Phillips screw to remove & under that plate there is a small hole  poke a small pin punch to release the cylinder .
the chrome ring on the lock has a small die cast tab to stop it from rotating which has sheared off , you need a new ign lock assy which can be keyed to match the other locks

This week-end, I completely tore apart and dis assembled my steering column to prepare for blasting.

The one tricky part I was running into was trying to take the broken key cylinder out.
I did use a nail thru the little hole to depress the pin to un do it. But it wouldn't let go to come out.

Sitting on the couch thinking while watching NFL, a lite came on....

Put the key in and then try. Key cylinder popped right out.
That's the trick he didn't mention in the re build pdf. I have.

So now I need to make a list oif everything needed to re assemble.
