auto to 4spd swap parts?
« on: September 11, 2013 - 01:51:23 AM »
Well I have a 71 cuda im building.  It is a 340 auto car but im considering changing it to a 4 spd. What all would need to be done?  Trans hump
tranny
linkage
bell housing
console?
Driveshaft

how hard is it. Pros and cons? The slap stick is cool but a 4spd would be great. Some people say keep it but i don't think i will have a chance to get another one. What are everyone's thoughts on swaps? Should I have just bought a stick car?

Thanks. Do you think the swap is worth it or leave as a auto? My car isn't painted the correct color anyways.  Would this swap hut the value more? How are the slap sticks to drive? Fun?

An auto is an auto, they are ok but nothing compares to shifting and to me nothing looks better then a pistol grip shifter.
You can find a complete list of everything at brewers I think. They used to advertise on ebay 3k or so for everything including the trans for a changeover.

Very hard to answer the question , from a resale generally it will not hurt the value unless it is a #s correct car with build sheet , if you plan to keep the car what difference does it make , the car is yours do what makes you happy , personally I won't even look at an Auto car , I even passed on an original 71 Chall with a Hemi auto back around 79 !

Slap sticks are fun for acceleration/straight line stuff. If you like corners, you'll want a manual. If you want to cruise and run light to light, you'll be OK with an automatic.

4spd! 4spd! 4spd!

It's a ways down the line for me, but I gotta have a manual, and man, the way these built 340s scream, gonna be so much fun I can barely stand it lol. Good luck man!

Ps, I swear I really am sending you that mirror lol

There's all or most of a complete swap on moparts, I think in the E-body.

Just so you know.... you can still have a pistol grip shifter in an automatic. I agree, build what YOU want!

Just a a word of caution   Used parts you need to be cautious of  bushings, pivot arm wear, and most of all, the tranny.  Many used trannys havent been rebuilt, and if they have, my experience have shown they have been repaired just one piece  (the piece that was needed at the timeI, instead of being COMPLETLY Rebuilt.    Just remember, buyer beware ESPECIALLY with used or 'Rebuilt" Parts

The parts can usually be found cheap if you keep your eyes open. A few weeks ago, I called a friend about a craigslist ad I saw that listed a 80s truck engine and manual trans for $300 .

My friend bought the flywheel, clutch, bell, shifter, rods, OD-trans, and everything 4-speed related for $100. Now I'm just keeping my eyes open for the rest of the stuff to finish the conversion. He already had a set of pedals and is converting a Cuda.
