Ticks - Love to Annihilate Them
« on: April 01, 2005 - 09:32:58 AM »
I'm posting this everywhere, so if you see it on another site, oh well.

I hate these tick things so much I'd like to set the yard on fire & burn everything within 1000 feet of my house!

My daughter's 5, & was playing in the yard the day before yesterday since it was warmer out. She came inside for dinner, & since the weather is still fairly cool, we didn't think of checking her for ticks yet. She woke up yesterday complaining her eye hurt, so my wife starts to look. Damn tick attached itself to her lower eye lid just under the eyelashes. It almost looked as though she had a piece of lint stuck to her lashes & not a tick.

Being such a sensitive area, my daughter kept flinching & squinting making it impossible for either of us to grab the tick with a tweezer. We also know about having to get the whole blood sucking POS insect & not leave part of it attached. So..... a call to the doctor to be told to go to an eye specialist that now includes a day off work & a day of school missed.

My wife said it was awful at the doctor since she didn't want anyone to touch her eye. I don't blame her because I can't even put in eye drops without feeling as though it'll blind me. The good news is the tick is off, but she has to go back today after school & make sure all of it is gone so there's no infection.

This isn't the first time a tick gave us grief, our daughter had been diagnosed with Lyme before she was a year old. We never saw a tick, a bite or anything except the rash with the red ring. The strange part was that she had 5 or 6 rings in different places. It was treated with antibiotics right away so she is fine, but we can't help worry when we see a damn tick.

Please, anyone with kids in an area that has been know for ticks, get a magnifying glass, a telescope, a shop vac or whatever it takes & check them over when they come back inside.

Ticks aren't our friends.

Man I feel for the little gal, glad everything has turned out ok, yes this is serious stuff. These little pest are more than a "little" threat and especially if you have pets they can get into the home even easier. Wothwhile post, - thank you for the personal reminder.

Poor sweet thing!  Must have scared her to death! Red's got a friend that was diagnosed with Lyme's disease. He was out of work for the better part of a year with symptoms similar to severe arthritis.  All from a tiny little bug.  He's back to work now, but those little buggers pack a powerful punch!

Ticks are the worst.  My big fluffy dog has been infected with Lymes twice now.  I am religous with the Flea/Tick gel from the vet, but it doesn't even work.  Once she had a bunch on her before we started using it, and the gel killed them all with in a day or two, but now they don't seem to be affected by it at all.  thank goodness we caught it quickly both times, but I feel the same way about burining the yard. :fire:

After she was diagnosed with Lyme as a baby, we've been very cautious with watching for ticks. The small deer tick is the main carrier of Lyme in this area & you can barely see it. (NY & CT) Probably the size of a pencil point while the dog tick is about 5 times that size. The larger dog ticks are the common ones, & don't carry Lyme, but they do carry other things that are just as bad. The hardest part of pulling one off is when it breaks & the barbed hooks stay in the skin. I had one on the back of my shoulder once & couldn't see it to remove the sucker. My wife got it but it broke. I had to go to the doctor to have the rest removed.

I'll take a wasp, bee, or hornet sting anyday over this crap. (Not that I'd go out of my way to stick my hand in a nest though.)

That sucks, Man. I hope nothing serious comes from this for your daughter.

We don't have a tick problem here either...instead, we have spiders. We usually have someone come spray in the spring & fall...and a family member or two will still get bitten a couple times a year. :madvibe:

Oh that poor baby!!!!!!!  I hope she is feeling better now that the tick has been removed.  My dog Vixxen had Lyes last year.  I would also say that about 65% of the dogs that coame to stay at the kennel where I work were infected with Lymes as well and on medication for it.  I use the Frontline stuff on both dogs which is supposed to protect them against tick bites and I also got both dogs the Lymes Vaccine and she still got it.

I was mountain biking a couple of years ago. I came home and took a shower to wash off the mud and stink.  :P Anyway, I had shorts on while biking. As I showered I noticed an unusual pain in my upper thigh area. Holy Crapoly, it was a tick!!!  :stomp: :stomp: :stomp: That sucker wasn't giving up no matter how much hot water I poured on it. A good shot of rubbing alcohol convinced him to let go, but that really scared me. More than a snake even.
