ANOTHER Turn the key and key and get nothing post!

Well today I had a free afternoon around the house so I decided to hook up my kick down gear. After getting it all figured out I wanted to take it for a ride and make any adjustments in the kickdown linkage and I go to start the car and nothing!  :dunno: It started for me a couple times earlier today before I did anything to it. I haven`t drove it in a few weeks and just started it let in run for a minute or two and that was it. Could I have done something wrong by moving the kickdown linkage at the tranny when I was messing with it? I tend to think no but I gotta ask the question anyway.
I am thinking either the starter solenoid or NSS is bad. I get nothing trying to start it in park or neutral, head lights are nice and bright ,I hooked up a battery charger for a second thinking maybe it is the battery... no difference. The starter and solenoid are both fairly new 2 years old at most, the battery is good too. I only have a simple test bulb for troubleshooting so i`m limited with what I can do.
How do you jump the solenoid out anyway? I shorted the 2 terminals with the blue line I drew in the picture? I tried real quick and got a couple sparks when I tried.  :dunno:
I`m sure it`s something stupid...but I happen to be more stupider!  :bigsmile: Plus I`m freakin tired and aggravated now so and I don`t feel like crawling around my car anymore today! So I will wait for the thousands of answers to roll in while I watch football! Thanks in advance guys!

What about the linkage going to the arm on the steering column? Mine was missing and wouldn't start/turn over with it not in the correct position? straight down as I recall?

kick down runs very near the Nss wiring on the trans , I bet that is where the problem is

Did the starter kick over briefly? (not to be done with a small gauge wire - use something substantial, like a screw driver)

The NSS or the wiring for it is my main suspect at this point. I really didn`t have it in me to get under there to check it out tonight. Can I just pull off the NSS plug and jump it out to see if the car starts?

I also neglected to mention that occasionally on long trips if I shut the car off sometimes it would not start up right away again. I`m not sure if that problem is related to this one. I had to give it some time to let the heat in the engine bay dissipate then it would start. Other times just moving the + battery cable a bit would get it to start up.  :screwy: I know the terminal on the battery wasn`t loose and the ground is good. I really think engine bay heat/headers was/is causing screwy things to happen when I try to start my car. Does this even sound possible? I see no burned wires either.

Yep I had a screwdriver didn`t turn over just sparked.

jump the nss switch by connecting a jumper to the relay where the picture shows a wire going to the nss and the other end of the jumper to ground.

Then see if it cranks
Thanks Strawdawg Is this how I jump it? I made a couple notes in the pic.
 I used to know how to do this on a 67 Cougar back in the day but I forgot how to do it, the NSS was bad on that car too. I think I also had to run a wire from the solenoid to the + side of the coil to keep it running does that sound right? I wont do all that now I`ll just replace the bad part when I figure out what is bad.

Then you have a starter or starter wire problem. Check the engine to -ve post wire, and +ve wire and connections on the starter and relay. If they are good, you will be removing your starter soon.

Starters don't like to work to good when they get hot.  Probably why you have to let it cool to start.

Went out to my car today for a little while. Now I get a one click sound when I turn the key, it didn`t do that yesterday. I can`t tell where the noise is coming from either the starter or the relay on the fender or somewhere else? :dunno: I haven't really done any serious troubleshooting,aside from turning the key and scratching the top of my head! :clueless: I don`t know what it is but I really don`t feel like getting involved in this. At this point I just might say screw it and replace the NSS, and the relay on the fender their cheap enough. Plus now I need to pull out the starter now no matter what, there is a rubber boot that sits on the bottom of the starter that has chafed away on my tranny lines and you can see copper wire showing (see the pic) not cool! If the starter is not junk that`s gonna need fixin!

Does anyone even sell a mini starter with a wiring harness? I had to make one up to fit the modern style connections on the mini starter I have and I`m not entirely pleased with how it came out. I would pay a little more for a starter with the right wiring harness included or buy a new harness to fit mine,just don`t know where to find one.

no one to help you? , I would hold the starter while feel if it is connecting , if it is changing the NSS & Relay is a waste of time & $$ .
There is a contact ring just inside the cover with the 3 screws often either the contacts or the ring is worn & needs replacing , the contacts are $5 for the pair

If you got a click, your nss is good, relay is engaging. Your starter appears to be the only problem.

 :iagree: with CP. Don't waste time & $ changing nss and relay.

Thanks Chryco and Dodj that helps me a lot. I wont get a nss and relay then no sense spending money on stuff I don`t need. Seems weird, if the starter is in fact the problem it was working just fine then nothing. If it was gonna die i`m glad it did it at home!
I had to pull the starter no matter what to fix that rubber boot thing on the bottom. I don`t know what to do for that yet, but I don`t want it arcing out on anything it`s a tight squeeze in there.
