Priming oil pump, which way does it turn?
« on: September 19, 2013 - 08:51:56 PM »
Before I get to involved with something else, I need to get this motor running. I want to use one of the priming tools to stick down there and turn the oil pump. Which way does the rod need to turn the pump? Will it hurt anything if the pump is turned the wrong way? If I remove the oil pump, can I reach up in there and knock out the brass bushing the distributor intermediate shaft sits in?

I don't want to sound too obvious, but your distributor is driven by the same gear/shaft as your oil pump so I'm guessing  it rotates in the same direction as the distributor.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Distributor on big blocks is counter clockwise. Spin the drill in reverse.

When you begin the priming, it'll go at first effortlessly, then all of a sudden it'll feel like the drill went under load. That's how you'll know oil is beginning to pump up.

Watch your rpm's. Nice and steady and not to fast. Rotate the crank once it starts coming up at the heads and repeat again every 90 degrees.

put a temp oil gauge on the block.
I rotated my crank 30 degrees, got oil pressure
up to around 60 I think, with the variable speed drill,
held pressure for a minute, then rotated crank another
30 degrees, and repeated process, untill crank rotated 360 degrees.

if possible,  use a drill with one of those oldschool tightening systems ( no clue what they are called in english... lest say a gear/pinion wrench    In reverse the others will come loose.  Alse hold on to the drill,  it can really bite.

All big blocks turn counterclockwise
All small blocks turn clockwise

I've also heard folks removing the spark plugs and cranking it to get the oil moving around before initial startup.

The drill is a nice easy way to do things though.

You also mentioned about replacing the support bush, check how much wear first it may be alright. A link to a thread about the bush is below.

I think you'd call it a "keyed drill chuck" Bart.
