I am interested in any and all problems and their fixes for this box, as I mentioned I will be fitting one to my LRE, I would fit it to the Challenger also but I am converting that to a manual box. There are very few people here in Australia who work on these transmissions as we have very few here in vehicles anyway.
There is a lot of info out there but you do need to work out what is real, one thing that has cropped up and that is fitting different clutch paks without checking appropriate clearances, also changing servo actuating arms, some are good and some need other modifications to be done.
Good luck and I hope that you get this box sorted out as it has a good write up from many people who have done the conversion.   :burnout:

i think i'm giving up on this whole overdrive quest. i bought a gear vedors a few years back, it blew up twice in first summer.

Blew it up twice?! Wow! What kind of a torque monster do you have in front of the trans - a stroked big-block? Just curious. Please, continue ...
Cheers!

If you've had two Gear Vendors units go bad, and then the 518 has problems, I'd be tempted to look at your motor as the common denominator. Are you sure the crank is aligned properly in the block?

ok, lets see. the gear vendor blew up behind my 340 twice, behind my buddies 340 once. the 518 is in a car that has a mild stroker that had a 727 behind it for 2 years with no issues so i don't think there's a problem with the motors but i sure appreiciate you thinking outside the box.
the gear vendors was a dud, there's no doubt, thanks to the folks at gear vendors i was stuck with a $3,000 pile of $hit. as far as the 518 goes, the more i talk to tranny shops around town the more i'm finding out that the guy i had build mine WAS the guru 10 years ago but all the tranny shops are fixing his stuff lately.

So gear vendors didn't stand behind their product?

I'd really like to hear your experience with them, if it was pretty bad I might not deal with them.

gear vendors rebuilt it twice, quickly and no questions asked. they said that the amount of damage done it looked like it was used in a large motorhome and being used for severe downhill brakeing/ holdback. when they rebuilt it the second time my warranty was almost up, i asked them if there was warranty on their last rebuild they said no, once the factory warranty was up it was my problem and not theirs. i told the guy what i thought of him, his tranny, his company, his phone manners ect and i swore i would never bolt another one of his products into anything i owned nor would i recomend their product to anyone.

You can check gov pressure real easy by hooking a pressure gauge to a port on the trans. I forget which one. I think its on the tailshaft housing right where it meets the case. IIRC pressure should go up about 1 psi per mph. Just jack up the rear wheels, install gauge and check it out running in gear.
I had a gov. Problem on a 518, but it didn't shift at all, no gov pressure.

i dropped the car off at a different shop today, hopefully he has better luck. i explained the symptoms and he doesn't believe me, instead of arguing with him i just told him to go through it very thorough.

Well after hearing that, I am certainly going to stay away from them. Might just have to learn to with with my 3 speed and a lower rear gear lol

as usual if you throw enough money at a problem it will eventually go away [ except women problems]. got car back and i'm gonna say that this guy got it right. this thing has always upshifted to soon and wouldn't downshift soon enough. now it shifts perfectly. driving season is over in this part of the world so hopefully it stays this way.
