1971 / 1972 Parts Swap
« on: September 29, 2013 - 11:47:00 PM »
Will 71 Cuda front end and tail panel fit on a 1972 Cuda with out modification? I am sending my car to the AMD resto center and it would not cost any more for the 71 parts vs 72 parts.
Thanks for any info on this subject!

The issue will be that the 71 will have 4 headlights and although not impossible . . . Will require some work.

It's a long and winding road to convert a 72-74' into a 71'.

Make sure your wallet is locked and loaded if you commit to do this.
There are many differences.

72's are still cool.  :2cents:

Yes they'll fit, but it will cost more than just the tail panel and front end.
The wiring will be a little different because the 71 has more headlights and the lights in the front valance, as well as different side markers. You'll need headlight buckets along with all the goodies to mount the headlights.
If you just want to put a 71 grille in between 72 fenders, it's possible, but requires either nip and tuck on the grille, or a new header panel.
If you're going to change the quarters, tail panel, front fenders, header panel and front valance then you still need the marker light kit along with the headlight kit, valance kit, and wiring for it all.
If you're not changing the quarters, then markers change between 71 and 72, so you'll either need to patch panel the quarters so the markers match the front fenders, have 2 different styles when you're finished, or delete them all together.
The bumper brackets are slightly different as well and would need to be changed out for 71 style so they line up with the dips and wiggles in the 71 grille. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but that's a quick list of what you'd be getting into
1972 Cuda 340 4 barrel 4 speed that looks like a 71
2006 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona
2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 4X4
2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible (Kidmobile)
1972 Dodge Charger 318 auto
1970 Challenger 440/727 auto
1973 Plymouth Duster 340/auto (Making it Panther Pink for the wife)
2006 Honda Civic Hybrid (It doesn't save gas, it just diverts it to the Cuda/Challenger)

71 header panel is unique in the mounting pattern where the plastic clips go vs. 72'.

I'm about 99% completed on my 72 to 71 conversion. i had to replace my rear qtrs, so the only body mod's i needed were the gills and light patch panels. i bought the lights, grill, etc over time when i saw good deals on ebay and from memebers. it took me about a year to get everything together.

I really thank you MOPAR Enthusiasts  for the information. I thought that the 4 headlights were the hard part. I am replacing radiator support inner and outer fenders along with the upper and lower cowl / firewall. Since the 71 parts cost roughly the same and the labor the same I would be home free with a tail panel. I did not know the tail panel would need new quarters. I have new 72 quarters and frame rails, torque boxes in the corners w/Hotchkis frame connectors with all sheet metal to the firewall already installed, less tail panel. I was going to let AMD install that during the visit to Buford, GA.
LONG STORY SHORT I AM NOT GOING TO RE-REPLACE THE NEW AMD QUARTERS TO MAKE A TRIBUTE OUT OF THIS 72. THE WIRING IS GOING TO BE REPLACED SO THAT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE. WITH OUT A PICTURE OF HOW THE HEADLIGHT BUCKETS WERE ATTACHED I WAS GUESSING THEY WERE PART OF THE FENDER. I MUST HAVE BEEN WRONG. ANYWAY THANKS AGAIN FOR HELPING ME WITH THIS DECISION

BY THE WAY DON'T FORGET ABOUT CRUSING THE COAST STARTING THIS WEEKEND THROUGH THE WEEKEND OF THE 13TH ! THE MOPAR BREAKOUT SHOW IS GREAT! COME ON DOWN 20 MILES OF BEACHES CASINO'S ONE OF THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF CLASSIC CARS IN SOUTH AMERICA!
