Best all around street tires
« on: October 01, 2013 - 10:11:05 AM »
My Cuda is almost finished. I'm upgrading the rims to 15X7 in front and 15x8 in the rear. The car will be strictly street driven. It has a 408 stroker motor with a 727 tranny with a 2.5k stall. Needless to say, the stock 14's aren't able to handle the power. i hear the BFG's stink, but I’m limited with other options. Thanks in advance.

Because I bought the last set of Indy 500 tires, I've heard Coopers and M/T is another avenue if you don't like BF T/A's.

I would have suggested the Firestone Indy 500's too but if they are disappearing...?
My next choice would be M/T

I have no first hand experience with them but I will be giving them a try when the Firestones wear out? :dunno:

I've been running BFG Radial T/As for many years on the "street/hwy".. typical 245-60-15 front and 275-60-15 rear, on factory steel 15x7 ralley rims.... and I've appreciated their reasonable quality.   More recently, I've installed them on 15x8 vintage mini-lite rims, still a-ok (street/hwy).   Now, in the past 2-weeks (Sept 2013), I've replaced them brand new BFG T/As 255-60-15 fronts and again 275-60-15 rears.. still on my 15x8 vintage mini-lite rims.... I'm very pleased with the ride on the hwy (typical cruising speeds of 60-70~ mph).  I do have a very stiff suspension (and still drivable without regret or grief in the ride quality)... setup for pylon-autocross and road-course lapping events, so, the "taller" sidewall of 60-series helps to give a slightly better ride quality on the roads (street and hwy).

Just this past wknd (my-oh-my, how time flies when you're havin' fun!), I've picked up a set of 16x8 mini-lite rims having new BFG G-Force Comp-2 tires sized 255-50-16 front/rear... I'll try to get them get them mounted onto my car for "street/hwy" test driving.  I intend to use these 255-50-16 tires for occasional hi-speed road course lapping sessions, maybe some "competition" hi-speed auto-cross events at those same road race tracks (typical avg speeds of ~70-80 mph per lap).

I also have 16x10 light-weight road race rims with Hoosier A6 275-45-16 autocross race radials... although these tires are "DOT-approved", they are not truly intended for daily street/hyw driving... I've driven with them to some local events and they are a handful... wanting to follow every contour of the road... two-hands on the steering wheel!... those types of tires are ultra-sticky (40 tread-wear) and grip likel glue!

I may, possibly, swap the BFG G-Force Comp-2 255-50-16 new tires onto my 16x10 rims and use them for road course "practice lappind sessions", then get new Hoosier A6 tires (255-50-16 f/r) for the 16x8 rims... and run faster in the local hi-speed road course autocross competition series (perhaps 2014?)... but I'd have to get a trailer for the car (miss my old full-size trailer and 2500 Suburban), or else, thinking of getting a small tow-behind utility trailer for the Hoosier A6 tires.. and mount them at the day's track event.

Well, if you need to buy rims and tires....  It just may be cheaper in the long run to go to 17s first!  I bought the Summit 17x9s for just under $600 shipped, and the performance tires were another $800.  I already had shiny lugnuts.  If you go to 17x8s, those will be cheaper, and if you get a "normal" tire in 17" you can save some dough there.  I've always like Yokohamas in 17".

Too bad that firestone closed there Firehawk line.  That was by far my favorite 15" tire.  BFGs are essentially hard donuts, and Dunlops aren't much better.

EMCD -- IF you're staying with 15" rims (7 and 8), truly your choices are very limited.... I can attest to that.   As long as the backspacing is correct with your rims (7" needs 4" bs, 8" needs 4.5" bs), the tire will stay in the factory stock location within each wheel well, and you shouldn't have any fender problems or otherwise.   For what its worth, as I've just INCREASED the front tire size on my Challenger, from 245-60-15 to 255-60-15, I'd say the ride is better... a slightly taller sidewall giving slight;y better ride siftness, as well as slightly gained round clearance for my headers, etc.... and, I can adjust the ride quality simply by adjusting the PSI o the tires... I've settled at 28 front/26 rear, or bump them up to ~38 f, 36 r for dry road course action (could even be a little higher, say ~40f-38r).   IF you do any pylon low-medium speed autocrossing, forget about any quality 15" street tires to do the job... you'd have to get another set of rims/tires for that action if you'd want to be half-way competitive as well as having some increased "fun".

I know that the Mickey Thompsons were mentioned, as well as some Nitto's... they offer some 17" tires with a decent tread wear rating of 300.. and the prices of 17" rims can be found fairly affordable (Year One's rims 17x9 Mopar ralley rims with 275-40-17 tires are an excellent choice.   For summer performance, consider the lowest numerical tread wear ratings for best grip.   Truly, in my opinion, "grip" won't be noticed on plain street driving... but instead, better noticed on highway type of driving (or road course events for certain!).

Ultimately, you may really want to consider having two sets of rims/tires per your activities.   The lower tread wear tires (200-300) (street/hwy allowable) will wear out more quickly with the better gripping;  the higher tread wear tires (above 300 say... ~340 and up, but don't go beyond 400 if possible), will last longer IF you want mileage out for your tires and willing to sacrifice grip.

As an extreme example of tread wear grip/life, the Hoosier A6 DOT Autocross tires will last about 60 minutes of autocrossing before throw-away time (maybe less or more pending the driver's style, etc).. BUT... there is NOTHING in a DOT category that grips better (in the dry... and, they also make rain versions of the A6!).... Check out the Tire Rack web site for details of different tires, as a starting point.

Overall, again.. with your 15" rims, selection and performance is limited to us.... just have some fun with whatever you'll get!

Thanks guys. I'll see what's available in the Denver market. What Nitto line is best for street use? My only concen with. Hard tire is the rear breaks out al the dime with the original 14" with cooper tires on it. I don't wan to drift a love th place, so drag tires don't sounds good. Does that narrow it down?

Best unknown IMO is the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta.  A lot of people have never heard of these. I've had two sets.  I don't believe they come in less than 17 " though.

I saw these Vredestein tires on ebay, but havent really heard much about them from anybody that has them.  Do they stick?  Do they turn? Do they wear out fast?  Quiet?  Anything about these tires would be good to hear about.  Thanks    J

I just looked up the Vredesteins Sessanta tire.  Found a good review.  It actually won the tire test against all the common big name manufactures.  I looked them up on ebay.  Found 255/40/18 with a 26" diameter for $218.  Then found the 295/35/18 with a 26.1" diameter for $240.  Free shipping.  I just may go this way.  Save some cash.  Im sure my rear tires wont last long anyway.  At least I can afford a set of these.  Almost half the price of Michelin.

I loved them.  I had them on a Cobra kit car I built. On the road they were great in dry weather.  Never had it out in the rain, no top for it.  They were smooth and quiet, although I couldn't hear much over the side pipes. I took the car to a track day once and they performed great.  Really gripped well under speed and smoothed out the curves.  I think they are a great tire for the money.  The only thing I can't comment on is how they wear over time. Someone fell in love with the car and offered me an amount I couldn't turn down. I miss that car though; yes I was a rebel, I put an all aluminum BBC in it.  610 HP and 678 lbs of Torque

That cobra sounds BAD A**!!.  Its good to hear how the tires hooked up with all that power.  My engine is similar (not quite as strong) and I was worried that tire wouldnt hook up at the track.  I will do mostly spirited street driving with some track and autocross.  I am not doing a full race car, but an awesome street car, so the tires have to last and work on the street too.  Im sure the rears wont last as long as the fronts, and I can always move on to another brand if I really dont like them.  But the Vredesteins sound nice in the magazine test and from the reports online.  Im sold.  Thanks for the firsthand feedback.
