Aluminum power steering box? Possible?
« on: October 01, 2013 - 08:09:40 PM »
This got brought up over on Moparts and I thought I make use of the great minds over here... ? More minds the better! :grinyes:
Can anyone see a reason why "someone" couldn't machine up a copy of a Mopar power steering box in aluminum?  :dunno: If so why didn't Mopar do it? They have aluminum manual steering boxes?
I have a couple bigger chunks of 7075 aluminum taking up space in my woodpile!  :icon16:
It would be cool to lose a few pounds off the front of my car!  :grinyes:

You better hope it's a slow winter bud. Then again, I've seen how fast you can run that mill.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

With all the angles because of shape? Porosity issues?

Did they even have CNC technology then? Not as good as today of course.

Just gotta work faster to keep warm in the winter?  :icon16: ( no heat in the garage)
Must be a reason why Mopar didn't do this on power steering boxes , just manuals? I've been searching the net and haven't found any manufacturer who has made one in aluminum? Must be a good reason?  Can't take the PSI a power steering box needs? :dunno:

No CNC came in during the late 70's but even still today no one has a power steering box housing made of aluminum?

well, mark me down for one.

So, your really looking for someone with a cnc machine to make you a one off.
I'm curious what the cost of that would be.

No, thinking of tearing apart my old leaking power steering box and whittling away a block of aluminum with the mill/lathe in my garage! Time I have, money..... not so much!

I just sent Dick at Firm Feel a message asking his opinion? I figured if anyone ought to know why no one has made a aluminum power steering box he should!  :grinyes:

I doubt it? Same as the Viper caliper brackets I made...... cost prohibitive due to machining time and material costs? But a one of might be a fun project if it's possible from a safety/engineering/durability point of view?
