Stupid coil question
« on: October 05, 2013 - 01:35:56 PM »
How do you tell which side of the coil is negative?

Trying to hook up an aftermarket tach.

There are no stupid questions here. Someone will chime in with the answer. I don't know either.

The one on my car now, & I think all of the stock style, have a + or - molded in the top next to each terminal

:iagree: And if it doesn't, follow the leads coming off of the coil. The "negative" lead connects to the distributor and the "positive" will connect to the ballast resistor. If the wires disappear into a wiring harness you could always check the terminals with a multimeter or probe light to see which terminal has power when with the ignition key in the run position to identify the positive terminal.

You haven't seen some of my questions then.. :o

I agree with bullitt, Ive never seen a coil without the polarity identified by one or both of the primary terminals.
