AMD 70-72 rear bumper brackets on 73?
« on: October 09, 2013 - 07:37:24 PM »
Received my AMD 70-72 challenger rear bumper brackets but I don't get how these will mount. I've read on here they will bolt to a 73 rear bumper, do I have the wrong parts? Picture is the new and old bracket and backside of my bumper.  :pullinghair:

You need to toss the re-bar in the garbage as well. :2cents:
I personally don't think the bolt holes on 70-72 bumper's are the same distance apart as the 73-74 bumper's, but if you read it on here, then it must be true. :grinyes: Usually you need to swap the bumbpers as well, if not for the bumper bracket holes, then at least for the bumper guard holes.

By re-bar you mean the inner metal bumper?

Anyone have pictures of how these brackets should mount?

Yes the inner bumper is not used in 1970-72.

Here's a side by side...70 vs 73

I have the 70 brackets on my 73 and they mounted right up . . . But I do believe I needed a 70 bumper as well.

The rear bumpers are in three groups.  70-72, 73, and 74. The brackets and bumpers will interchange as an assembly on the 70-73 cars.  The 74 was changed slightly due to increasing crash protection.  Dave you now need the 70-72 style bumper.  You can drill new holes in your 73 bumper to use the older style brackets. I have done this and filled the extra original holes with bumper bolts that bolted to nothing.

Will 70-72 bumper brackets bolt on without any modifications to brackets or car on a 74? Then I can just use 70-72 bumpers and get away from those 'lovely' bumperettes.

To the best of my knowledge yes.  I don't have 74's here to measure.  I know the rear bumper bolt holes in the 74 are different than the 73.  The 74 uses a different rear bumper bracket. What I am unsure of is if the holes are the same in the rear of the car for the brackets. I know the front bumper brackets will interchange as a bolt in assembly.
