Garage Working Clearance

I live in an older house with a two car garage built after the War, 1946 to be exact. It is not a big garage. Entry side is about 86 inches clear and back side is about 82 inches clear. Driveway slope up from the street so not a good place to work on cars. Let say if I need to pull a small block engine out of my Challenger and replace with another small block. Do you guys think I have the clearance in height to operate an engine hoist?  Length of garage is about 1-1/2 car length. This should be obvious that it is coming from a guy that have never pull an engine before so pardon my newbie question.

Sorry by not being clear. 86 and 82 inches are garage height.

It would be close but I think you'd be okay. Worse case is you may have to drop the front end after the engine is
loose and lifted a bit.

Can you open the engine hood all the way ? If so, you'll be ok....

I would say yes no problem. Mine is 81" at the lowest point 90 inches and the highest. I installed mine from the bottom though?

Just curious, when you install from the bottom, can you leave the headers on? Sure would be a huge help!

Ok, let me see if I got the steps in my head right.

After disconnecting all hoses and wiring, draining system fluids, take the hood off, then:
1. Raise the front of the car up high and support with jack stands.
2. Take wheels off, suspension, power steering, shifter linkages disconnected etc
3. Use engine hoist to support the weight of the engine and trans.
4. Disconnect trans mounts, K frame from chassis.
5. Place a dolly below the engine and lower engine and trans to the dolly.
6. Pull dolly out from under the car.
7. Place new engine and trans on K frame sitting on dolly.
8. Slide dolly under the car and use engine hoist to lift engine/trans/k frame up.
9. Attach k frame and trans to chassis.
10. Lower car and reassemble.

How do you raise the car that high? I don't think most floor jacks can to that. Where to attach so the unibody will not be damaged? Is this a one man job?

Wait, I think the trick is to use the engine hoist, right? So raising the car/engine and then finally lower it relies on the engine hoist. Front end weight must be on the hoist until engine is disconnected.

Do all the work with the car as low as possible. Unbolt the k-member/tranny etc, while supporting with a dolly then raise the car up until clear of the engine.

Hmmm, ok. Keep the hood closed. After engine trans sitting on dolly, use engine hoist to lift the car up with straps attached to front bumper?

Seriously ? You can leave the hood on, but I'm affraid you'll need to open it.
