How many engines were available for 1970? 8 or 9?
« on: October 15, 2013 - 09:14:03 AM »
For some reason, I thought I heard there were 9 engine options for 1970 but I can only count 8?

Were there 8 or 9 engine options for 1970?  Thanks!

I count 9 for 1970:

C = 225 "Leaning Tower of Power"
G = 318-2bbl
H = 340-4bbl
J = 340-6bbl
L = 383-2bbl
N = 383-4bbl
R = 426 Hemi
U = 440-4bbl
V = 440-6bbl

I think the L-code 383-2bbl often gets overlooked.
Cheers!

In this ad they only mention one slant six (225).  They do mention THREE different 383's though.  They break down the 383-2, 383-4 and the 383 Magnum.  I don't know exactly what the difference was between the 383-4 and the Magnum.  :dunno:

Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

As far as i know the 4 barrel is the magnum. The Data book for the 1970 Challenger lists the 383 4-barrel engine twice. One with a dual snorkel air cleaner element and a single snorkel one on that was supposed to be standrad on the R/T. We know that's not correct. I think any difference never materialized, but I could be wrong on that. 383 4-bbl motors are N-code.

The 198 was introduced with the coupe (Deputy) model.

Ok, dug up 1970 Challenger brochure pics.  1 340 engine and 3 383 engines!  Weird!

So one of the 383 is supposed to come with an unsilenced air cleaner but yet the pic shows a single snorkel air cleaner housing?  :clueless:

I don't understand the purpose of a 383 2 barrel?  :clueless: Seems to me one 383 would cover it?
  If it's fuel savings your after buy a 318 or slant 6?

Dodge Charger came with 383 330 hp Plymouth Road Runner came with 383 335 hp, if you ordered the Road Runner with air condition you got same engine as Charger 330 hp because this one didn't rev that much so the air condition blowed up.

A question comes up though as RzeroB  mentioned the 340 Six Pack engine.

Why isn't the 340 Six Pack engine mentioned in the brochure or the Challenger T/A?  Was it something to do with when the T/A was introduced?  I thought I remember someone saying it was introduced late in the 1970 model year?  :clueless:

Yes, the T/A and the Deputy were released later and aren't covered in the original dealer Data Book. I have never seen updated ones, only the What's new from Dodge brochure and Deputy brochure stored on Barry's site.

That's bizarre? I wonder why they wouldn't just make the pulley bigger on the A/C compressor to slow it down?  :clueless:  That would have been cheaper?

The question about the different 383 (4 barrel) engines was discussed in an earlier post a while back. The carb's were different. The 335 hp had a Holley, the 330 hp had a Carter.
Magnum- Dodge, Super Commando - Plymouth......  The change over for the carbs came mid-year......
They were both "N" codes..

 :iagree:
There is a post here somewhere...
Of the three 383's (383-2, 383-4, 383-4 Magnum), the first two shared the same cam, while the Magnum got the 440 cam.
