Engine rapping...lifters?
« on: October 16, 2013 - 10:14:04 AM »
Hi guys, thanks in advance for any advice.

The car hasn't been started in like 6-8 months.  Not on the road.  Started it up today and for the first time I hear what might be collapsed lifters?  The engine has about 106K miles, never been taken apart/rebuilt.  Still all stock stuff.  The oil was changed last month but the car was not started.  I changed the oil as there was gas in it from a carb internal leak so I didn't start the car, just jacked it up and changed the oil.

Factory gauge showing good, high oil pressure as it normally does.

I'm letting it idle and warm up.

Question is, I'm thinking maybe there is some gunk in a lifter oil hole. Is there anything to add to the oil to help lube/clean the oil?  Or am I looking at lifters?  Mystery oil or anything to "smooth out" the oil or am I dreaming?

Hi acudadude!   Thanks for the reply.

I actually just went back outside and the engine quieted down.   I'll see if it does it again if I start it up cold next time.

Love this car.   If the battery is good it starts right up after several seconds of cranking!  Even after sitting so long.

Thanks again.   :)

sounds like the lifters bled down from sitting for so long. once they ran and got pressure to them they quieted down. my guess is you shouldn't have any more problems going forward.

You engine isn't messed up
It's just been sitting far too long
You gotta get it on the road
And it'll sing a different song
You got the engine rap
Here what I say?

Thanks jhaag, hope I don't have this any more.  I'll try to start it up tomorrow.

I've had the car sitting for longer and never heard the such loud lifter noise noise before so it alarmed me.  Hopefully its nothing.  Thanks guys!  :)

It's probably a function of the oil being diluted as you stated, which would leak down easier than normal viscosity oil. I'd drain a qt out and replace it with a qt of Rislone. Good stuff and been around a long time. Good luck.

I'd be inclined to take it for a drive at least once a month

I'd be inclined to take it for a drive at least once a month

I might sneak it around the block, maybe not.  Car isn't registered and the last time I did go around the block I found out a police officer lives on the street behind me.  ::)  On that ride though I did realize the car really wallows in the corners so I wanted to upgrade the rims/tires.

Went out this morning and the car started up without any noise.  :)  Good thing I went out to start it as when I was out a couple days ago and I filmed a video of the Slap Stik shifter operation and the gear indicator color changes, I left the parking lights on.  :22yikes:  It was a new battery so thank God it started up no problem.

Thanks for the input guys!  :2thumbs:

If you do start it in the driveway occasionally then make sure you fully warm it up to rid the oil of absorbed moisture. Something like 20minutes. Also keep it at 1200rpm or higher to splash the oil around and don't forget the stabilizer in the gas tank that should be full to keep moisture out of the gas. Sorry for the ramble.
