383 Dyno pulls

Just dyno'd my cuda 383 and thought i'd post the video here for those who would miss it on my resto thread. 

30 over, melling components, stock crank, flat top pistons, mr6pack cam (Bob Karkashian).  Ran great, 330 horsepower, 393 torque.  Not sure what these made for torque, but that number seemed respectable.  Obv HP was about stock.  Used the original Holley carb List 6191.

What a great feeling you must have!  You made that happen and it sounds great!  I love the first time a motor fires up and it all goes well. 

The HP is right in line, but the torque is fantastic.  That's really what you're going to feel driving the car too.  HP is top speed and torque is off the line power.  That motor should launch good.  What compression did you end up at?  It sounded like it ran really nice.  Did you have to tune the carb at all?  Did the dyno guy do a sniff test to see how the carb was operating?
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Impressive torque number!!

I think of torque as low rpm hp, like under 4000 rpm or so.

But the computer program for my 496 shows max torque at 5400 rpm, and max power at 6000 rpm.
I have a long duration solid roller.

I've read that the right stall converter can add up to 75 hp to the rear wheels.

Looks like a decent build , I have never tried to build a stock appearing engine without doing hidden improvements like ported heads & cam upgrades , I would have brought a lone another carb just to see how much that limited the power on the dyno out of curiosity .
Overall on the street torque rules & you have lots , should be a fun ride  :burnout:

Sweet!  Thanks for the feedback guys, and yes, I was in heaven all day.  It's especially sweet because I know there have already been a few times when the project has seemed like a daunting amount of work.  This makes me feel like it's finally attainable.  I'm not sure exactly what compression was, but mr6pack bob recommended 9.5 to 1 and I fed that information onto my machinist who built the engine with me.

As far as the carb, I had opened it up and it looked freshly rebuilt, but upon putting some pressure into it (before starting obv) we found a couple of small leaks and replaced a couple things using the kit i brought (thankfully).  Other than that, when we got the engine warmed up using the other known good carb they had, we put mine on and it started up immediately.  On the dyno it took these guys a total of like 3 minutes to tune the mixture using the RPM readings, and there is no metering block for the secondaries on the 6191 carb, so the tuning was very easy.  No sniff test though and i'm sure when i get back to california i'll have to adjust it a tad (i'm currently doing the build in Iowa). 

@Chryco Psycho - We used both their new style Holley and the original carb I had, and we looked at the curves side by side.  Both carbs operated almost exactly the same with the exception of the original 6191 carb being just short on power because it had a bad vacuum secondary diaphram.  In my kit there was a new diaphram but it had an eyelet on the end instead of the chrysler only diaphram with the elbow on the end (that I ended up having to find at Daytona Carbs in Florida), so we did change the diaphram, but it was a hair longer and we had to rig it onto the carb, so my expectation is that the carb performance would be 95% the same.  I was surprised.  BTW the new one we were using was a 80670 Holley with 69 jets in front and 72 jets in the rear.

It seems like it should be a little more then that because of headers.  Back in 2002 my first 383 was built to stock specs and even with exhaust manifolds, it made 342 hp. and 401 ft.lb. tq.

It seems like it should be a little more then that because of headers.  Back in 2002 my first 383 was built to stock specs and even with exhaust manifolds, it made 342 hp. and 401 ft.lb. tq.

Hey cody that was on engine dyno built to stock specs. and exhaust manifolds.  my 3rd 383 and most recent made 494 and 470 tq.  and now thats being made to a 450 stroker, but not done yet.

is there a way to calibrate a dyno, to make sure
you are getting an accurate number?

not really , test on a Dyno jet & you will always get 15% more power than a Mustang dyno which are both chassis dynos  , I have always tested on a Mustang dyno as my friend owns one , he bought it as he felt is was more accurate & repeatable but also allowed more diversity in testing ,  the Dyno jet can measure acceration load but will not allow a steady load such as cruising at a steady speed, so if you test acceleration only the accelerator pump will scew the jetting reading but in a cruise mode at different RPM the accerator & power valve should be removed allowing more accurate tuning
