Hey all!

Finally have a 1970 Challenger R/T I can call my own! :)
VIN# ends in 666  :22yikes:
383-4bl - mild cam
Auto (floor console) w/ shift kit
3.90 gears

Previous owner had it for over 30yrs and had it restored in 1987 to how he would have bought one new in 1970.
Originally a Tor-red w/ black vinyl top and now it's all Plum Crazy Purple. 


There are a few things I'd like to make right with the car and was hoping to get some guidance from the pros here :)
1-Incorrect "440 Six-Pack" emblems on the Rallye hood.  Found the following emblems but am not sure which ones to get.

a/ "383 Magnum"
Hood nameplate for 1970-1971 Challenger models with Rallye hoods
Part Number: P2998801
Price: $91.99 ea


b/ "383 Four-Barrel"
Reproduction "383 Four-Barrel" hood emblem for 1970-1971 Challenger models
Part Number: VC154
Price: $45.99 ea


I'm confused between the 2 options for a few reasons... The "383 Magnum" description specifies it's for a Rallye hood whereas the "383 Four-Barrel" does not. Then again it also doesn't specify it won't fit a Rallye hood.

So if they both fit a Rallye hood then which one would be the correct one that would have more than likely been with the car since day one?

The "383 Magnum" is double the price of the "383 Four-Barrel" plate. It doesn't appear you get a pair for $91.99 either.

At the end of the day, the most important concern to me is that I get the right one that would have come with the car when new.

I've got a bunch more questions but figure I'd deal with one thing at a time within the same thread here.

The 383 Four Barrel emblem would be mounted to your fender instead of the R/T, so you want to put the 383 Magnum emblem on your hood :2thumbs:

Looks like I'll go with the 383 Magnum badge. It appears they made a 340 Four Barrel badge but not a 383 Four Barrel one.

2- Currently there are a set of headers on there and both have been "massaged" in place. One side is split where it bolts up to the block in 2 places. This results in a pretty good exhaust leak and a ticking noise.

So I need to replace the headers. What's the favourite around here?

I'd like high quality that is built to last. I've never researched or bought headers before so I'm a bit lost...


You can see one of the splits in the middle of this picture. New gasket behind it did nothing :(

I recommend TTI headers they are the best and fit great.  You can't go wrong.  You will spend a little more but in the long run you will be happier.  Good luck.

That picture you posted of where it is cracked, looks to me as a cut, that will have no bearing on anything at all towards a leak where that cut is, sometimes the header plate is cut in that location from the manufacturer to allow flex of the header pipes when installing and removing. You will not get any gain from taking these pipes off, they look fine to me. Perhaps it is a simple change of exhaust gaskets that will cure the leak :2thumbs:

There's another one about 4" away from it not quite as clean cut. I changed the gaskets and can feel the exhaust escape from those 2 spots .

No build sheet but have the fender tag and VIN tag. It's N code so 383.
Back in 1987 the previous owner had it painted to how he would have ordered one back in 1970 if he had the money to buy one back then. He also had personalized plates that paid tribute to Plum Crazy Purple. Guess he really liked the colour.

What header gasket are you using?  I have found Remflex gaskets the best at sealing up exhaust leaks on headers.  Here is the link to the website: http://catalog.remflex.com/category_s/154.htm

These gaskets are not cheap but they do work well.  I had exhaust leak problems and these gaskets fixed the issue.

A JH car with a N engine code has the 383 4 bbl emblems on the fenders.  It was not an R/T.  A JS car with an N engine code is an R/T.  It has the 383 Magnum emblems on the magnum hood.  Is your car a JH or JS car?
