Driver side quarter replacement - 73 cuda
« on: October 21, 2013 - 09:56:35 PM »
Getting brave and gaining confidence. I removed the driver side quarter that had been pieced together with braze.  I knew that I had an issue with the B pillar before I started.  I've noticed the issue with other cars at shows with bubbling paint so I'm thinking that it is not unique but not seen anyone post on the repair.  I need to fix the angled support piece connected within the window frame.  I do not see it on AMD site.  It'll be a challenging removal. Ha anyone seen this part or if not I think that I can fabricate something if necessary.  Any ideas?

You are going to have to cut the roof back a little more.  Mine was rusty up another 6 inches.  If it doesn't go any farther, you can just cut some steel patches and weld them in.  You can look at mine in the members restoration under 72 cuda resurrection.

Thanks guys.  Mine definitely goes up about six inches based on what I can see through the window frame (I think you can see it in one picture).  It looks like there is a seam within the window and looks like one piece.  I really don't want to cut the roof, still paying for the other metal purchased. What was it you did to access the metal?  I was thinking that I could cut and remove without cutting into the roof skin.

You'll have to cut into the roof.  I didn't worry about it since that area from the factory had lead filled in anyway.  Extending the filler another six inches is not bad.  I cut a piece of sheet metal and bent it to the contour of the roof.

Did you have to remove the drip edge as well or cut around it?  I'm planning to remove the entire piece because of the rust hole spots.

I had to repair mine.  It had a rust hole in it. It wasn't that hard.  Just time consuming.

I just spent 30 minutes going through your project log.  Very Impressive and motivating!! I have many of the same issues you had and lots of questions as a new welder also.  Metal preparation has also been a mixed bag; dipping, sand blast, stripping?  I like your approach due to the stages of restoration effort.  I'll have to start a log. Thanks.
