Outside Storage
« on: October 22, 2013 - 02:12:30 PM »
I am losing storage and have to keep my car outside in Illinois. It will be under a carport but does any one have tips/suggestions on keeping it as safe a possible? Where to get a good outside car cover? Thanks,

Whatever cover you choose, I'd cover that with a big Harbor Freight silver tarp for waterproofing.

I am right next door to you in Indiana 28 miles North of Indy, so our weather is very similar. I raise hay to supplement my income so I have become somewhat of an expert on the characteristics of moisture and condensation over the years. I have also had to store my car outside for long periods of time before getting a shop built. You need to get it under the carport and cover it with a good breathable cover, if it can't breath it will collect moisture and rust, even if it never had a drop of rain on it. If you don't drive it in the winter I would get it up off the ground (a few inches)and put a layer of moisture barrier (4 mil plastic would work) underneath it as well to keep moisture from coming up through the ground. A good cover can be purchased through several vendors I got mine from classic industries I believe, cost me about 150.00 if I remember right, a good investment no matter where you keep your car.
keep honking I'm reloading

I have used a thick bass boat cover.  Worked great. Fleece on the inside and a rubbery waterproof outside cover.

Hi,
I live on the 'wet' coast and need to store my 65 Valiant outside. It's parked on pavement but no carport. I use an older evolution 3 car cover from beverly hills motor accessories (are they even still in business?) and, most importantly, a small fan inside the car running 24x7 and the windows open just a crack - about 1/4" (just enough to let air circulate). I've had problems with the interior moulding otherwise...

Eric.

I know this may sound offbeat but put builder 6mil poly down on the ground under the car then cover with gravel if it is not a concrete or paved surface. Stops sweating hence moisture then rust. Also swamp every part of the interior, trunk and under hood with Bounce perfumed dryer sheets to keep mice away (I am thinking 2 boxes here). I also use a live catch trap under the car with poison bait in it. They go there first before entering the car. The live trap is in case you have other pets - don't want them eating the stuff. Works for my 5th wheel that mouse trick.
Also fill the gas tank full and add fuel stabiliser first. Keeps the gas good and the full tank keeps the moisture out.
