Newb near Seattle
« on: October 24, 2013 - 01:15:06 AM »
I've been reading some posts and thought I'd join and see if anyone has any tips on my project.

I pulled the 383 out of my 70 Cuda vert due to rear seal leak and planned to have it stroked to a 496, etc.  Shop called and found a 3 inch crack in the lifter valley through a slight bulge, must have froze at some point.  Set the matching 383 aside and now building a 505 stroker from a 78 440 block.  Current status is the block has been rough bored and the 440 source stroker kit arrived to machine shop today.  I plan to go with the performer RPM intake and heads.  After much deliberation I think I'm going with the Lunati 60304 cam, working with a 2400 stall and 3.23 sure grip.  Also plan on headers, not sure which yet though. Also plan to install subframe connectors to strengthen the body some to take the torque.  Let me know if you have any pointers or you think I should change something.  I don't plan to take it to the drags, just a fun weekend cruiser to romp on once and awhile.

Hi and Welcome. Sounds like a really cool project, shame the 383 gave way in the lifter bores. The 505 should be a good alternative in fact, heaps of power on tap, good choice of camshaft too :2thumbs: . I would suggest getting the chassis connectors and the tower braces for even more rigid strength where it is needed, check out US cartool to see their chassis connectors and tower braces they make, very nice stuff. When you get a chance, post up some pictures of your convertible, we would all love to see it

Haven't heard of that shop, but it sure looks good.  Let us know how it turns out.

I agree the US Cartool stuff is nice. If you have questions about their install, contact Chris there. He was an amazing help to me when the inner fender braces were introduced.  And Welcome to the site.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Sweet! That's my favorite car of all time, I'm a little biased though. Hope you get the engine issue straight so you can get out and cruise that thing. Be prepared for a lot of attention, as people really like these shiney red cars. Enjoy, and welcome.
