What is this attached to the steering shaft?

Hi there.

I need to install a hydraulic master cylinder under the brake booster. There is a long ear that is attached to the steering rod with turns about 90 degrees but has no obvious purpose (that I can see anyhow).

It will foul on the cylinder so it has to go. But what is it for and can i remove it?

Well I did it a long time ago (15-20 years) so the memory is a bit fuzzy, but I had the steering shaft removed from the car. In the workshop I rebuilt the column without the lockout. It is a fairly long tube piece if
I remember right. Don't think you can remove it without disassembling the column.

Remember if that lever is not in the right position the car won't start.....  Just thought I'd throw that out there?

Can I get a little more info on that comment? This ones got me a bit baffled...

If its removed then the car wont start? If i can't remove it I cant bet the master cylinder in? Should there be something attached to it??

I think the car starts but the steering wheel is locked. PUll it up and see. It should rotate smoothly. It will probably lock the steering wheel.

You can cut off the lever but the "stub" has to be in the correct spot to start, take out the key too I think?

I removed mine and when you do the lockout attaches to the lower piece below the ignition switch, you can then turn it clockwise or counterclockwise. Actually can work as a theft deterrent for those or are theft challenged.

I wondered about this too.  Should there be something connected to the tab in the engine compartment?
If not, what's the p[point of the hole in the lever?

Yes, there is supposed to be linkage that goes down to the transmission. Mine is missing too.

Hmmm. Just tossed mine and forgot about it. No issues.
