try installing the studs thru the headers just like they were bolts

true, but on my Hooker Super Comps, there is only about 1/2 inch between the flange bolt hole,
and the 2 inch pipe, in some locations.

I just installed the Hedman Elite headers on a 440 cuda.  I used bolts that the headers came with.  Seemed like only the outer holes went into coolant jacket as my pocket screw driver seems to think that anyway.  Studs would definately hold everything in place better while installing though.  I refused to install super huge starter, hoping a MSD mini starter will slide in with header in place.

I agree with you. I've only had coolant come out the front or rear holes. The centre holes are blind not through holes into the coolant passages.

longer bolts can give you a better grip.

The ARP bolts for chevy small block header bolts were just like my Mopar big block bolts, but
1/4 inch longer.

the holes only open into the coolant at the front & rear of small block heads which is why there are only studs in those positions , all the big block head holes are open originally but over time rust & sediment can block the holes , same with the drain holes at the bottom of the water jackets you can often remove the plugs with no coolant lose until you poke through with a screwdriver or similar
