V5X body side molding length
« on: October 28, 2013 - 01:33:34 PM »
Hoping some of you can help me. In recent days, I have been collecting V5X body side molding pieces to restore my 1970 Challenger. I have discovered a length issue with the front fender pieces. I have one that is 60 inches, which seems to be the same as the damaged original still on my car. I also just acquired another, which is only 58 3/4 inches long. Both pieces are properly tapered inward at the door end and the front edge is correct. They look identical except for the length.

Is there a possibility the front fender pieces were different lengths in different years or might the 58 3/4 inch one be from another Mopar?

Would those with V5X front fender moldings please measure yours and share the length?

I suppose I could just put the 58 3/4 on one side and no one would probably notice (except me)!

(For completeness, the doors are 56 inches and the (curved) rear quarters are 67 inches.)

Hmmm...I don't know if they are different for different years.  My car is a 72, I can measure in the morning before going to work if I remember...

Here's a pic of a 1971 for reference...

Wait a minute, how long is the one on the passenger side?  I assume 60 inches?  :clueless:

On my car, the passenger side molding was knocked off before I bought it. Just the broken plastic clips are there now. The damaged 60 inch one is on the drivers side.

Speaking of which, has anyone found suitable replacement plastic clips? If so, where did you get them, please?

Another related idea. Doesn't the Barracuda have a two inch shorter wheelbase than the Challenger? If so, is the two inches of difference on the front end? If so, it could explain the difference. Maybe I have one fender molding from each car...

Good question.  I do know that the Gran Coupe headliners are about 2 inches shorter than the SE headliners.

The front fender is the same length as the Challenger front fender. :grinno:
 I will contact my Brother and ask him to measure the side molding on his car, he has a SE Challenger with these factory fitted and they have never been removed on purpose, one side was slightly damaged and tried to remove itself in the confusion it was meant to stay on the car, i guess the shipping company did not realize these moldings are meant to be on the car and not damaged in transit :banghead:
I will get a real measurment for you :2thumbs:

Ok to addd to the confusion  , I just measured my front passenger side molding (I assume the driver and passenger side is the same.) and I got

58 5/8" long

This is for a 1972 and this is factory installed.

So are they different lengths for different years?  :clueless:

An inch or two longer would put it close to the nose of the car....

Perhaps different lengths for different years, then. I asked the seller again and though he could not remember since they had been in a corner for years, he said my 58 3/4 inch piece may have originally come off a 1973.

Here is a photo of the clips. If anyone knows of a source, I'd appreciate getting aimed in that direction.

For those interested, the replacement clips R/T Specialties sells that are like mine pictured above are part #1000167. They say they are for 1972-74 Challenger, but they appear to be the same as on my survivor 1970.

Also, if anyone has time to measure the length of your front fender moldings, please share the info, including the year.  Thanks.
