1973 cuda stock rear widest tires without any mods?
« on: November 01, 2013 - 10:48:35 PM »
i have read through a lot of other posts before i get told to look. but i cannot find anything on using your stock rear i believe 8 3/4 with the drum brakes. ive seen how to get ones with a different diff length etc but im talking about getting a rim and tire combo that can bolt right up(no mini tub etc) i have crap 14 inch craigers on now with dry rotted BFGoodrich on them i know i need to go with bigger wider rims but i am unsure of the height, width, ratio back spacing etc to get that will work. The car is a 1973 cuda i just bought. its got a worked to the bones 416 stroker i need to get some kind of traction without modding the suspension that will come later when money permits. Front wheel nd tire specs to match would be good too.

I run a 275-60-15 on the back. Would not be able to go any bigger stock. Rims are Dodge steeliness with 4-1/2" backspace.

This is my exact same dilemma, I wasn't to us either a 17" or 18" diam rim, no bigger because I want some sidewall but don't want to go much past 26 or 27" O/A tire diam. I'm looking at on the rear 9" wide min, prefer 9.5-10" but I think I'm pushing it and I don't want to move anything or roll lips. I'm seeing 4.5 bs is the number. Fronts I'd go 7"-8" rim width. Tires I'd like 295's rear and 255-265 front.

If someone can confirm that combo and that they have it on a 72+ Cuda without mods that would be awesome

Its going to be a street car also where is a good place to buy the rims and tires at decent prices?

I think 295 will need 10" wide wheel.

I also would like to know the tallest, widest tire I can put on a 17" rim on the back of a Challenger without any mods ?

Will a 17 X 9 rim fit on the back ?

I have 15 x 8" rear rims with 295 50 tires & it clears barely but with the 17 /18 " rims you have less sidewall bulge so I see no reason why a 295 on a 9" rim would not fit as long as the diff is centered & the backspacing is exact

295 is the width of the tread , so it depends how tall you want the tire to be , most use the 275  60 15 which I think looks too tall on an E body , but there is almost no other choice in 15" , I found a 275 50 for my car which is the same width but approx. 2" shorter
Once you go into 17 " you have a lot more choice so a 295 50 may be tall enough if you go to a 45 or 40 series the tire becomes shorter , any good online tire store should have listings of the different widths & heights of the different series tires

I have 17x9, 5" BS and 275/40/17 at the back. Tires are Hankook, overall height a little shy of 26" which is close to stock height. There are about 5/8" clear either side with stock suspension location.

Front is 17x8, 4.25" BS and 245/45/17.

So according to on-line tire calculators....Comparing your 275/40/17  to a 275/45/17's I would end up with a tire the same width, but almost 1"taller ?? Does that sound right ?  I like the look of the 17" rim but not the short side-wall tire, I want to get a good width but also fill the wheel well from a side view. I plan on using 17 X 9, 5"BS rims as well.

sounds right , the series affects the height not the width so a 45 will be taller than a 40 series tire
