70 Challenger going Plum Crazy
« on: November 02, 2013 - 09:41:29 PM »
A 70 Challenger that's spent the last 15 years parked in a barn is coming back to life.   The paint was showing it's age so I had it media blasted back to bare metal.  The new paint is the same color as the old.  The frame stiffeners  shown are a recent addition.   I've driven the car about 20 feet (all in the body shop parking lot) since I bought it in September 2012.

My understanding is that the previous owner changed it from a 318 automatic to its current 340 with a 4 speed.   He bought it in Mississippi while he was in the service and then moved it to his home state of Washington.  I bought it from him while I lived in Iowa (which is where it's getting painted) and have since moved to New York.  All of the sheet metal is original and bondo-free.   The interior and engine compartment need clean up and many replacement parts, but that will hopefully be relatively straightforward.   I learned the hard way from my last project car ('79 Camaro) that I suck at body work.

I know this one will be worth the wait.  My thanks in advance to all of you that will be stuck answering my questions as I dig into this further.

No issue just yet - just showing pictures of a restoration project underway.   I probably should've put this in the "restoration projects" section, which I came across after I made the post.

Bart - so the short answer to you question about the glass being in is "yes."   I have to admit that I don't know how the glass was protected or what type of media was used to strip it.   I do very much trust the person doing the work so I'm not concerned.

It will hopefully be ready to ship from the paint shop in another couple of weeks.... just in time for the snow to fly.

Topcat - no build sheet available that I know of.   I haven't actually spent much time around the car, so I can't speak to the fender tags and such just yet.   The car was shipped from the previous owner in Washington state directly to a body shop in the Midwest where I had lived previously.   The first time and only time I drove it involved motoring around the body shop parking lot... not exactly an extended road test.   It will hopefully make the rest of the journey to NY where I live now in the next couple of weeks as the reassembly after painting is completed.

Get the sheet and tags in your hands whatever it takes!

A few more progress pics on the Challenger are shown.  The color on these photos came out a little weird because the day was actually pretty overcast when taken.  The car is coming back together at long last.

I forgot but just my .02 worth. I think it needs a white R/T side stripe.

:clueless: Maybe I missed something but I didn't see a question. Nor was there anything mentioned about body parts being replaced.  :clueless:

Heck of a first post. Welcome aboard, I think.

Thanks for the comments.   For this post, I wasn't asking any questions.  I'm mostly just waiting for the painting work to be completed.   It's been 11 months since I dropped the car off.    It's actually supposed to be finished tomorrow, so hopefully it won't be much longer... I have to finalize and then wait through the shipping arrangements too.

I have thought about the white stripes as the sides could probably benefit from a little something.   I want to be standing next to the car and mock up different options before I figure out what I'm going to do.

I'm leaning hard towards a RMS Alterktion unit and Cragar SS rims, but that will have to wait (there's that word again) until I spend some time going over the car thoroughly.   I already have a new dash pad (thanks Mopar Dave!), new carpet, and a set of Mopar Performance valve covers sitting in my basement.
