4 Speed Noise

Ive got a 70 Cuda with a 440 and A833 4 speed.  Have had no trans. or clutch problems since installing a new rebuilt trans and new McLeod clutch and pressure plate about 2 yrs. ago.  Yesterday out of nowhere, when pulling away from a red light in traffic, I hear a fairly loud clunking noise that is rotational/rpm related.  When you push the clutch pedal in the noise goes away....let the clutch back out...noise comes back.  I was close to home so headed there immediately.  In the driveway, in neutral or in gear with the clutch in,there is no noise so definately not motor related.

Based on the noise described above I thought maybe a press. plate mtg. bolt may have come loose and was hitting the bellhousing everytime it came around or something like that.  I put the car on ramps and pulled the inspection cover to find all the press. plate mtg. bolts tight, and nothing visually out of whack in the clutch, press. plate, TOB, clutch fork, front bearing retainer, or flywheel areas.

Any ideas on what my problem may be based on the described symptoms?  Im hoping for a clutch, press. plate or TOB/fork problem as opposed to a trans. issue.

Hopefully a chunk of your clutch hasn't come apart or the one of the springs come loose!

Guess you will have to pull the pressure plate to find out.

Hope its not the tranny either.

if the noise goes away with the clutch pedal depressed & you are rolling along at speed I doubt it is the trans as the trans is still driven from the driveshaft

I'd also check the U-joints/yoke/rear bushing for any excess movement.

I dont think its the u joints as they are new also...but I'll check to make sure....Im thinking its in the clutch/press. plate area.  Looks like i'll be pulling the trans. to find out the problem.

Long shot - try taking the bottom bellhousing cover off and check the torque of the pressure plate hold down bolts one at a time and rotating the crank to access them. Trouble is if the bolts have been loose for a while then other damage may be there.
