I think I understand what you're saying, and I kind of agree. OTOH (assuming we're talking about the motivation for making the TA in the first place, I would add that Ford made the Boss 302 for the same reason, but that didn't stop them from making a Boss 429.

My take would be that Chrysler has always been chronically short of money, and that they probably would have liked to keep the TA builds as simple as possible, i.e., no drivetrain swapouts. However, what would have happened if a guy walked into a dealer and said "I want a 440-6 car, but can you build it with TA stripes, please?"

Ford made the Boss 429 to homologate for nascar racing to compete against the HEMI engines etc... they didn't just throw one out there for fun like they are assuming about this 440- 6 T/A.

To me we know the car was modified by the paint, so if the car was disassembled and the tag is a repop, it's outside the ta's original design scope and no reason for the factory to produce it, hasn't surfaced in 44 years (unlike those rare documented shelby pre production cars that we around) ... I side with not factory or a 440-6 with some dealer added goodies.

The build date on the car in this thread was 924. So this person would have to be clairvoyant since the Trans Am cars weren't on the lots for another 6 months.

That is a very good point. So what dates are associated with:
1 - The decision to go SCCA racing?
2 - A reasonably final design for the street TA?
3 - The beginning of TA production?

...Car Craft had an article about the new T/A prototype in the April 1970 issue, and with a standard 60 day lead time the car was probably photographed mid January 1970 and the middle of March 1970 the April edition would have hit the news stands...the prototype had a different hood(friend of mine owns the hood), different striping and a different rear spoiler.......so, what are the chances the car in question had all the standard T/A parts and stripes when the prototype didn't have these items several months later, PROBABLY ZERO !
