Pop tabs for Owen
« on: November 12, 2013 - 12:21:59 PM »
Last week my wife and I sat down with a monument company and designed Owen's gravestone.  We took some money out of his memorial account to pay for the down payment.  That got us thinking about what we want to do with the rest of the money in that account.  We received a lot of support this year so we want to give something back.  One of the organizations that helped us was Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.  For those of you who are not familiar with this organization, here is a link to their website. http://www.rmhc-memphis.org/facts

One way Ronald McDonald House raises money is by collecting pop tabs. In 2012 they collected $28,000 worth of tabs.  I've decided to start a "Pop Tabs for Owen" campaign.  I thought this would be a good way to say "thanks" and to keep Owen's memory alive.  This would also allow my wife and I to donate the money in Owen's account to a few other organizations.

So, I'm asking for everyone's help with this.  I've already contacted Owen's school principal and she is excited to get the whole school involved.  The school had a penny drive for us at the beginning of the year.  The kids raised $3000 in change for Owen.  I'm sure they can collect a lot of pop tabs.  My parents are going to get their church involved as well.  I talked to my sister and she is going to see if she can get something going where she lives.  I thought I'd put this up on a couple car sites because I know how much we like are adult beverages.  I thought all of you could come up with quite a few tabs as well.

The logistics of getting all the tabs in one place is going to be the tricky part.  My idea was to have Carlisle and The Nat's be drop-off spots.  I go to The Nat's every year but I haven't made it to Carlisle.  If this works out, I'd be looking for someone who goes to both shows to possibly help deliver the tabs collected at Carlisle to me at the Nat's.  So, if you are interested in helping me with this...start collecting the tabs off of your cans. If you have any ideas on how to make this go smoother let me know.  I'm open to ideas. Thanks

Darren

Darren...God willing, I'd be glad to pick up the tabs for you. We go to both shows and I would most likely be taking
my truck (hopefully with a cuda in tow behind it) so I will have lots of room.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

OK I will certainly nominate myself for the person to collect the tabs at Carlisle if Andy is not able . . . but I think it would be very cool if you made an effort to come to Carlisle this year and hang with the group!  It is certainly different than the Nats and I promise you a great time!

Just so we are clear . . . this included all beer tabs and such?

For those that don't know, it appears that the tabs are made from a higher grade of aluminum and worth more than the can . . . well in most areas anyways.  Here in Michigan, cans are worth a dime . . . .

Since I would never drink beer out of a can, I will be collecting pop tabs . . . .

Pop, soup cans, beer exc...

You can still recycle the can and get the deposit in states that redeem them.

I drink a lot of both pop and of coarse adult beverages  now if I can remember to tear off the tabs count me in  :icon16: I try to go to the nats every year but the last two years haven't been quite successful but it will be a new year and I hope for a better change. I'm sure I can get another member here Mentally Challenged to help out with this.

Hi Darren, hope all is well, never heard of collecting these before.

So you want the little pull tabs off of any can?  I don't drink much soda but I'll collect what I can.  I can always send it to you or who ever is collecting.

Yes, just the pull tab.  It's a higher grade of aluminum....collecting the tab is not messy like collecting cans...they take up less space....you can still recycle the can for your deposit.  Thanks!

For those of you, who may not be familiar with Tab collections for Ronald McDonalds house, check out this site. http://www.cnyronaldmcdonaldhouse.org/how-you-can-help/pop-tab-collections/

You can also get a cool little house to store them in and held you remember to collect them.

Count me in, we don't drink much.....anymore, but we will do what we can and I will send them to whoever is going to Carlisle, or the Nats.

Hi Darren....good to hear from you.   :grinyes:
Collecting the tabs would be no problem, but where or to whom would I send them to? Would there be a cut-off date to send them?

The problem is that it will cost WAY more to send them then the tabs are worth.  If you don't know anyone near by that will be going to Carlisle or the Nat's, then you could probably donate them to a local school...a lot of schools already collect them.
