Green Axle Bearings
« on: November 14, 2013 - 01:14:29 PM »
Hey guys,

I want to replace the axle bearings in my 8-3/4 rear.  Everyone is saying go with green bearings.  Where should I get them and do you know what part number it should be?  Thanks

Dave

yeah i ran them on the street in a 86 lazer i built with a 360 and a 8-3/4 and did not have the best luck with them with not many miles put on them, on the otherhand the factory bearings seem to last forever. but that was 12 years ago maybe they are better now?   bruce

I've heard they're great for straight line running, but don't like the side load of cornering. Dr. Diff is
a good person to ask and buy from.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

That's odd that you say that about cornering...I just installed a set of Wilwood rear disc brakes and they require "sealed green bearings".....I would think a lot of corner turners would use rear disc brakes :dunno:

A good place to buy them is your local Chrysler dealer P5249444....I have two sets in stock, but I'm not into shipping stuff and you're most likely not local... :crying:
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

My buddy Darcy ( also a member on here) used them in his circle track car and they didn't last 2 nights racing. That was enough for me to never use them.  :2cents:

Ya, I would only use them for a drag car not for a street car, the factory tapered bearings are much better.

I've had a set on my Dodge truck for years without any troubles.. I install them on everything here. There are 2 types of green bearings the St-400 snap ring type (which I use) and the flange type RP-400. My press gets alot of use here. I have replaced bearings that had been installed incorrectly both tapered and green. I always inspect and measure the parts first..Since it is a .0002-.0006 press fit .I use a arbor press not a hydraulic (this way I can feel if there is any abnormal resistance when I press them on). I freeze the axles in a freezer so they tend to go on easy. Some people like them and some people don't but honestly I think some havent been been installed correctly.

yeah your probably right john some may be installed incorrectly, and things like if you bought new axles like i did they could have been a touch to long and put pressure on the bearings all of the time who knows? and i guess some of it depends on what you plan on doing with the car, I ordered my dana & disk brakes from Cass last week and took brads advice on the tapered bearings and the 3/8" retainers. thx again brad for the info   bruce

Sometimes ignorance is not knowing. I can only give you my experience. I am no expert but Cass over at Doctor Diff I would consider a authority on this and has a better explanation than I could like here.  http://www.doctordiff.com/blog/tech-info/why-green-bearings/

good info there, thanks john sounds like the problems i had were probably with the old style bearings because i did have the rear shortened a bit could have welded the ends on crooked or been the wrong length axles and like the dr diff said the older bearings had no wiggle room.  thx bruce

I guess the real question is why do you feel they need to be replaced ?
