Painting 70 Cuda Rocker trim
« on: November 15, 2013 - 04:16:38 PM »
I need to paint my rocker trim, any suggestions on the correct paint?  I was once told textured argent, but the original paint doesn't appear to ever have been textured.  Looks more like a greyish silver.

Paint the back side in the simulated louver in a semi gloss black, each and every vent gets painted out so it gives the illusion of being an open vent, mask up each one individually and then procced to paint the entire rocker moldings in Textured Argent Silver, that is the correct colour for them, over the years it just gets worn off from dust a debris from constant driving, it is 40 plus years since they were new don't forget :2thumbs:

They were never "masked-up" from the factory. Paint them black from one direction, then textured argent silver from the other direction. :2cents:

I just had a look at an old original NOS set of 70 'Cuda gilled rocker moldings, and my posting was incorrect, from what i can make out and having a back ground on paint myself, their is Black overspray on the textured argent, so it looks like Chrysler my have had a painting template, like a window that they spray the Black semi-gloss paint through after the texture was put on, it has the wrong pattern on it to be any other way.
Does anyone else have access to a NOS gilled 1970 `Cuda rocker molding that they can have a look at too please. :2thumbs:

Wow, thanks for the help!  It sure looks easier to paint the silver, tape it off and shoot black than to paint , then tape the black and shoot the silver.

But just to clarify, on the NOS Gills you saw, were they painted the same textured argent that is used on the grill?

Looks like more than just four cold ones tho...

Yes they are a heavy textured silver like what should be on a grille :2thumbs:
Make a tin template of the louver openings and bend it accordingly so the template will contour to the moldings, it will look like an "L" shape with a layed over "D" paint window opening for the louver recess, this will simulate what you need to do and make life easier than taping up each section

Obviously from the rest of the thread you're correct. I'd point out, however, the difference between wanting a completely factory-original result and a really good-looking result. I had a guy tell me years back that my car was going to look like it just rolled out of the factory, and I told him "It'll look a lot better. They cut too many corners at the factory."

Hey Dave, :clueless: That way that Alan posted is not the correct way buddy :grinno: . They are painted Textured Argent Silver first and then using a template the black is painted second. Have a re-read of the thread buddy, and the link i posted. :2thumbs:

But i know what you are saying, i have been in situations where someone would say "they don't buid them like they used to" and i would say "yeah, the gaps and fit of panels were nowhere near the money".

Sorry I wasn't clear, Ken. I was saying that Alan was right about not going through a laborious masking process at the factory.

Looks like more than just four cold ones tho...            mine where painted silver already when i got them, but masking with the correct bendable tape, the job takes maybe 2 hours, max. including 4 cold ones  :cooldancing:  ive heard on here that the texture is in the molding, and that the paint´s not textured??  :clueless: but i do not have originals to check it up.okidoki  :22yikes:
