Restrictive Exhaust

In other posts I have mentioned that my engine revs so quick in neutral, with open headers, with a quick shot on the throttle yet seems overly sluggish doing the same thing with the mufflers connected., Today I began installing replacement Magnaflow mufflers to replace the Cherry Bomb Turbos I have on at present. First thing I noticed was that the CBs have a 2-1/2" inlet and outlet but they restrict down to about less than 1-1/2" inside the muffler. So that would explain my initial complaint and they must have been choking the engine like crazy. So I would not recommend these mufflers for any of the cars members drive. I don't think pictures will help as those restrictions are down inside the muffler. We will have to wait for the performance road report until next April as this beast is away for the winter.
Just though you all might like to know.

Update: yeeeessssssss this is going to be one sick vehicle. The difference on throttle response is like night and day compared to the old mufflers. And the sounds less crackly but more of a deeper sound. Ran it last night in the shed with open door and until the CO monitor started screeching. Probably will run like never before.

Neil - I am willing to bet this is the cure for my low speed carburetor loading issues!

dang, that's a terrible muffler design!!
I just read that we should install a muffler that has larger diameter inlets and outlets than the rest of the piping. ie, put in a 4 inch straight
through muffler in a 3 inch system, since the 3 inch muffler will always cause more restrictions than a bare 3 inch pipe.

I hear ya Bob. The new Magnaflows are 2-1/2" straight through as I chose that route instead of 3". I wanted the bottom end as well due to having a pretty high performance cam. Also with the restrictive units on I have had this car to 130mph on the road and it has gone as high as 8000rpm (accidentally as I don't have the funds to keep rebuilding) with visits to close to 6-7000 more often. Based on my observations with the engine running last night I can definitely expect a much better performance curve when I am able to use the spring roads next year.

Yeah let's go to Panama! Actually I did sneak a drive with the new mufflers. The car can now best be described as vicious. Breaks loose at 40 in 2nd on the primaries. Runs to redline in an instant. Trying to get traction in first is a delicate operation with feathering the clutch.

I have used them on 3 cars now , sticky tire , where 73E is blowing the tires off similars cars are hooking hard & they have decent tread life to boot  :2cents:

better disregard my comment, as the article I read was probably about the street tire, not the Nitto drag radial.
I did have BFG drag radials, and they spun very easily. The Micky's are really good!

Unfortunately I am a long windy road hiway driver otherwise it would be drag radials. They are too soft in the sidewall for my application. And I also have to figure out why my Mallory digital box lets the engine rev over 5500 which I have the limit set to. That may help in one way. But oohhhh it sounds nice when it is breaking the wheels loose, on a damp road, at 100+ mph in the old Passon OD 3rd gear. (Now 4th in the Passon A855)
