:driving: I have a 360/380 crate in my car (70 challenger convertible) and after a few years of minimal driving it got to making noise too.  The valve spring broke and the engine was getting ready to suck the valve.  I live in the pacific northwest and only drive when the weather is nice.  Mostly May through the beginning of September.  My car when tuned scares the sh#t out of me.  Unfortunately due to having three kids over the last five years I haven't driven it that much so I haven't kept it as tuned in as it was prior to having kids.  My car has 3.23 gears in the rear and 3000 rpm tork converter.  I prefer to drive it mostly on the free way so it makes me pretty happy when I drive it.  I do recommend you be very picky about which tork converter you put in your car because my last one went bad.  It has messed up my transmission (big block conversion) so you can't really drive the car the way I'd like.   I do agree with the person who said you can modify the car to meet your needs.  With offset wheels and springs you can get a lot of tire on the road so that handling is not an issue if you've set up your suspension correctly

I just wish I had a hard top so I felt safe driving the car to its limits when the opportunity presents itself..

I wouldn't even want to guess what is causing the valve train noise with hyd lifters, but I defently would not pull too high of rpms with it that way, the sluggish nature sounds like tranny/converter, either not built right or do not belong with one another? But I have the confindence to say this!! If your willing to pay to get CP to north Flordia your problem WILL be found out, the man is a wizzard with Mopars, If I ever won the lottery I'd offer him whatever it took to be apart of the Mopar shop that I'd build. If you can get the car to Carlisle, he'll be there, I hope our membership does not pester him with questions etc, because he should be there to enjoy himself, but I'm sure he'd be willing to listen to you and your car. However, should you decide to sell the car, please list it here on site FIRST! Good luck, it looks fab.!

That`s a nice car so I wouldn`t give up on it.A lot of hp gains can be had just by tuning-changing jets, squirters and such in the carb and getting the timing curve right.Gears and torque converter will change how an engine works also.Any idea what the rated stall is on the converter?

I had a similar experience with my purchase last year. My 72 Cuda was an out of state internet purchase. Like yours, a lot of work had been done and overall appeared to be a very nice driver. It was the color I wanted. It was a fully optioned automatic, factory AC car and was tired of looking. I was ready to buy a Mopar. After SEVERAL phone conversations and a lot of deliberation I sent the guy a check. About three weeks later they delivered my newly acquired purple passion. Well 2-3 days of proud ownership and the honeymoon was over. I discovered things like water leaking into the trunk, home made (and rusted out) trunk floors, water leaks in the cabin from a rusted firewall and cowl, an undisclosed fiberglass fender, and more. <insert violin playing dude here>

I blame myself for not getting off my butt and flying to MN and inspecting it in person. Even so, I probably would have bought the car but I think I would have used some of those things to leverage the sales price. I will never buy a car like that again. (unless its a steal, hehe  )

My goal is still the same but it is going to take me longer to get there. Maybe the longer journey will make me appreciate it more.

I can sure feel your pain Mike, but your Cuda has the look for sure. Fortunately, mine is extremly solid, just not screwed back together in a quality manner.

Relative to the torque converter, testing it with the brakes locked, it appears to stall around 2300 RPM. Probably too low for the RPM range of the engine which is advertised to have a power curve around 2800-6500. Presently I have the timing set at 16 initial and toal of 36 degrees, all in below 3000rpm. I just need to make sure, for my own comfort level, that I can get the car 'right' for no more than 2K additional dollars, as I dont want to have more than 20K total investment. I probably will never see that value out of the car, at least in the short term. :nopity:

dont underestimate the value of a mopar ...lately they have been going outrageous for mediocre cars and primo cars are ridiculous
sounds like a stock convertor to me and yes you need more stall
I was thinking about your problem earlier and you said it idles like sh*t,I wonder if the factory or the previous owner didnt screw up the cam timing and what you hear is what we used to call "slap". How fast or even does it crank over when starting it? How about when hot?

I don't mean to sound stupid but before you go crazy spending money getting the car to go fast ARE YOU 100% sure it is a 360-380HP motor. Did you check any serial numbers??? Just maybe the previous owner just went to the boneyard and picked up a 360-2 barrel  or 318 for that matter and cleaned it up and bolted on a four barrel and some other goodies and SAID it was a 360-380hp motor. Mopar Performance actually DOES NOT RECOMMEND the 380hp motor for street use... they prefer to sell the 300hp for street cars.
The car looks HOT !!!!!!  keep it and you will never regret it !!!!

First your car looks very nice, it will only go up in value.

Since originality is not a concern I would yank the small block and sell it local or E-bay and drop in a 440.
Frankly, the Mopar crate engines, including the Hemi have a very bad reputation for major build quality issues.
I have heard your exact complaints from many people using the 380/360 crate engine.
Most people who buy the crate Hemi pull it completely apart and mic every piece as there have been a lot of major issues found in them also.
This is not unique to Mopar only, as I've seen first hand major quality issues with GM's 502 big block engines.

A fresh, mildly built 440 can easily put out 500 plus horsepower on pump gas for VERY little money.
I have a 440 in my 73 Challenger that has a completely bone stock bottom end, it was taken from a 43k original mile 1966 New Yorker.
I checked compression, pulled the heads and checked the bores, dropped the pan and checked the rod and main bearings... everything checked out perfect so I didn't touch them.
I very slightly worked the original heads, standard MP .509 purple shaft hydraulic cam, Torker II intake, Holley 750 duoble pumper, Hemi 4 speed and 4.10 gear.
The car runs low 12's in the 1/4 in full street trim and exhaust, runs on high test pump gas and could easily get into the 11's.
I spank my buddie's LS7 powered 70 SS Chevelle on a monthly basis :)
The standard response to a small block person complaining about lack of performance is step up to a big block.

A big block Mopar engine will drop right into your car with very little changes needed and since your car's original number matching engine is not in the picture, a big block will actually add to your car's value.

ps. are you really looking for those big 73 Challenger bumper guards?

The complaint about the handeling makes me think back about my car. I was having a stability problem with my car and took it to two or three different shops to have it aligned and checked. They all said it was set to spec. I got the name of a guy that is well known for his creative work with circle track suspensions and took it there. The first question he asked me was "do you want me to set it up for street or strip?". Something no one else asked. I told him to make it handle as best it could. The car handled awesome. He said he set the alignment to modern car specs so the car tracks rather than wanders. Positive Castor with a little Toe out can make a world of difference. Good luck.

Karfever, that's really unfortunate you are not completely satisfied with your internet purchase.  As for the car itself, I agree with everyone else that the worst part of it is over.  As KillerBee said, if worse comes to worse, you could yank it and install another engine that either yourself or a reputable engine shop could build to your specific needs.  When I purchased my '73 Challenger, I wanted a project to ensure I could chose all the things that will be done to the car and I'll have that comfort of knowing that everything was built to my needs/ high standards.  All I can say is I hope you keep the car and before you do anything drastic, have Chryco come down there and help you out with it.

Man, that's a beatiful car! Keep it, fix the engine stuff and enjoy it! I too spent a lot of money on my Challenger, the first thing I did was tear out the low-compression 440 that was in it, and put in  a hi-nickel content '67 440 block. Night and day difference! Yeah, you'll need to spend a little more money on it, but then you'll have the car running the way you want it to. Good luck, keep us informed.
