Kinda long docu. I've seen a simalar one to this - this one sugar coats most stuff. The one I saw earlier showed all the dudes that went to remove the stuff from the roof (they were promised a case of vodka) a week later in the hospital with massive radiation burns. Graphic video. Chernobyl Documentary, it's called. Google it. They all died. Official Russian death count was 50 people. In reality, over 500,000 people died. It almost wiped out all of Europe with a cloud. Gorbachav wasn't alerted until 4-5 days later, because no one wanted to admit responsilbility. It is still leaking big time. All the other reactors next to it are on line, because they are too poor and broke and need the electricity. Most report I have read say Fukashima IS FAR WORSE. FAR WORSE, and is STILL spewing out tons and tons of radioactive material every day. Fukashima wanted to put a giant circus tent on the reactor to contain dust. No Lie. IT STILL Spews out thousands and thousands of tons of radioctive material. HAHA, don't read about THAT every day, DO YA?! Out of sight, out of mind. Russia is contaminated for at least 600,000 years. Fukashima is said to be worse. With all the money we waste on war, why can't we fix this stuff and build safe, reliable plants for everyone. There is a better use for our money. But people have to fight. Maybe Iran will screw up and nuke themselves to death. Turn the entire country into glass. One can only hope. We have many reactors in the USA that store spent rods on top like Fukashima. MANY. It could happen here.

It's a shipwreck nightmare still.

Point of fact: we're going to be forced to expand our use of nuclear power with the current government's successful shuttering of coal burning plants and its blocking our expanding our use of natural gas.  Clean coal & natural gas should not be off the table in the U.S.  Wind & solar are not technically capable of supplying the country's needs at this point and we need to get the power from somewhere.

chmark and lemooarce need to do some research before they are entitled to post here again. An earthquake could possibly trigger an event like the one in Fukimosho, and they stored their spent rods on top of the facilities, much like we do, in simalar designed facilities. Look it up before posting next time. People. Road Runner, I am all for wind energy. But we could learn a lot from our European friends. Instead of huge, massive propellers that kill migratory birds, set in thier flight path, the Europeans have demonstrated that a cylindrical tube is far more efficient, carries a smaller footprint, and is more receptive to the winds - ie, it operates from 12 mph to a set point, and doesn't become a giant bomb exploding if the wind gets to violent. AND it doesn't kill migratory birds. The Dutch have perfected this. We would do well to emulate them.

The only factual error I see is that you seem to be saying that Chernobyl is in Russia, when it is indeed in Ukraine. Radioactivity was spread across a large part of Europe, including European Russia, but the remaining problems are all centered around the plant itself.

Other than that, I'm not clear on what your point is. If you are thinking, as Road_Runner thinks you are, that we should eliminate nuclear power, frankly I'd love to do so, but Road_Runner's statement is correct. As your map so clearly illustrates, thee are nuclear planets everywhere, and that's because we need them. Exacerbating the issue, there are pushes on to eliminate coal-fired plants as well, which doesn't jibe with eliminating nuclear plants. If we get ride of both, we'll pretty much be returning to the 1800s.

Nuclear energy AND wind energy are benificial. They must be built more efficiently. I say that with hesitation. The reason the cost overruns are so high, is that midway thru the construction, there were numerous design changes and implemantations. (is that a word?) I'm pretty sure that the STP plant in Texas was finally cancelled because of cost overruns while it was being built. Maybe that prevented a future Chernobyl? I don't know. But it killed it. Did that Brownsville plant ever get finished? Nuclear can be an efficient, cost effective alternative. The wind generators that we use in the U.S. are just giant alternators that are very efficient at killing migratory birds. Eagles included. They aren't very economical. I said "Russia" because that is what most people can relate to. Ukraine means nothing to the general population. it is what it is. We aren't going to eliminate Nuclear power, but MOST people don't even realize how much we have in the U.S. alone. Ask an average Joe on the street. He has NO idea how many plants are here. He thinks that they are only in Russia or Japan, because that is what he sees on the news. There is a large push to get rid of coal powered plants. Or to convert them to NG. People keep saying that NG is cheap, and we have plenty. They think that the costs will go down. Guess what? NG is to the gas company for what Obama care is to insurance. Costs will skyrocket 47% to 150%. I gaurantee you. Pretty soon, we are going to have to take back control of our country. I only earn x amount of dollars. I want to keep as much money as I can. Between the Gov printing the stuff like it is free, paying for 50% of the welfare free loaders and increases in everything, gas, food, taxes, insurance - GOOD GOD! THERE BECOMES A POINT THAT YOU HAVE TO SAY NO MORE! no more. NO MORE. Sorry, a bit off topic.

Hey buddy. Sorry that you didn't understand that I was describing the documentary. It is difficult to understand, because it had Ukrainians talking with pictures going on at the same time. Plus there were subtitles. Christ, you have probably never seen that in your life. Chernobyl. - BAD Japan. Fukashima - BAD Gosh, if it would accidentley happen to Iran - GOOD. Now that I explained it in 4th grader terms, do you get it? lol. I'm sorry that your life sucks and that you are a troll. My original post was pretty explicit. I outlined the events. I do agree that your thoughts weren't well organized, more like a rant. But ranting is one of the services that c-c provides, so I don't have an issue with that. I've ranted myself. I don't feel like you were being insulting to any group, so I'm good there too.

Perhaps what people were responding to what that there didn't seem to be any coherent line of thought (that's part of what makes a rant a rant), and when that happens people tend to read into what is there, applying what they're concerned about, what they're afraid you might mean, etc.

Ukraine uses the Cyrillic alphabet (as does Russia and several other Eastern European countries). When translating, because there is frequently not a one to one correspondence between specific letters in Cyrillic and the Roman alphabet (used in English), words can frequently be spelled different ways. I have no idea whether "Chernybl" is considered appropriate or note, but I've seen it spelled several different ways, so I don't think there's one specific spelling that is considered correct.

Similar issues arise when translating into Asian kanji.

For what it's worth, the concept of a correct spelling is a relatively modern one. If you do a bit of reading from the time of the founding of the US, words are spelled in all sorts of interesting ways. They only things they have in common is that they were phonetic representations of the sounds of the words themselves. It's really only with the appearance of mass-produced dictionaries (e.g., Webster's) that the idea that there is one correct spelling for any given word started to become popular. This was early-mid 1800s.
