Timing issue?
« on: November 17, 2013 - 10:53:28 PM »
A few days back I hit a dang pot hole.  A couple blocks later the car died.  When I tried to start it up again it flooded on me and wouldn't start back up.  Is it possible that the bump knocked the timing back some?  I've only had the car about a month and driven it a handful of times but never had this problem.  Motor is 440 with demon six shooter setup and has a cam.  Idle doesn't seem any rougher than normal and a leaned the carbs out a little.  Took it out again tonight and car runs fine at idle in park but after driving a few I stopped at a stop sign and it died again.  This is my first big block and I'm not too familiar with the 3x2 setup either.  Any advice would be appreciated!

if the hold down is loose it could move , more likely to adjust the float level causing it to go lean or flood , you will have to reset the tune & find the issue

Ya, carbs would be the first place I'd concentrate, since it died, and was flooded when you tried to restart.

Maybe its dying now because you leaned it too much.  Might want to put it back where is was before the pot hole, and see
if things are ok now. If still flooding, maybe a float issue.  Maybe float levels were too high in the first place, since the pot hole
stalled the engine. Normally, would not expect that to occur.  If started right up the next day, I would not think timing was the issue.

Good to put a permanent marker mark on your rotor cap, and dist base, so you can see in future
if it has repositioned.

Also, with a timing light, see what your timing advance is at idle. Then, in future, if having a problem,
you can quickly check that, to initially at least rule out a timing issue.

I'm wondering if you didn't bend a fuel line when you went into the pothole.

Thanks all for the input.  I haven't had a chance to mess with it much yet.  Hopefully I can get some time tomorrow before this cold front moves in.  I contacted demon tech support, they said fuel levels should be in the middle of the sight glass on the side of the carbs so the floats were set high.  they dont make the six shooter anymore so they didnt have much more info for me.  I have the fuel levels set in the middle now but haven't had a chance to drive.

on 4 barrel Holleys, the float levels are supposed to be at the bottom of the sight glass.

I finally got some time to play around, the center carb won't hold a fuel level.  I can lean it out and the bowl still fills to the top.  I think I am going to swap the six for an EZEFI.  Has anyone used one of these?

Or you could rebuild the carb with a kit that is probably only $20?
