Barracuda Hood Springs Different Lengths?
« on: November 21, 2013 - 10:14:52 AM »
Hey,

Tring to adjust hood and fenders and been using info from earlier posts and I'm getting close.    The back edge of the hood is still up a little on the side that has the longer spring.

Which side gets the longer (Weaker) spring?   They looked oringinal so I believe they came with the car.  Or am I supposed to have springs of the same length?

Thanks,
Dan

Don't know the answer, but the springs on my 70 Challenger are the same.

Should have said mine is a 74,    One spring has about 3 more coils than the other.  :banghead: They both looked original and painted the same B5 blue.    Can anyone check their 73 or 74
But this might be why one side doesn't pull down the same as the other and wants to make the hood slide to the side when closing.
Thanks for your all's help so far.

can`t think of any reason why there would be 2 different springs on it. Maybe on the line, the crate with long springs was empty  :dunno:
I think you should be able to get it adjusted though. did you push up the front of hinge on the high side of the hood?

Yes, pushed / rotated that hinge to bring the rear down.  The side with the short spring is very close.  The long spring is not pulled down as much.  Want to keep the hinges somewhat aligned.   I won't be out to the car til tomorrow and can count how many coils each spring has.

Maybe you have a spring from a T/A or AAR? They are different than the standard spring.

I believe it came that way from the factory.  The way it matched everything.  Weird

OK,  I counted the coils.  Both springs are 2 inches in outside diameter.  The longer spring has 19 coils with (.250) diameter wire.
The shorter spring has 18 coils with a (.225) diameter wire.   The hooks on the larger spring are longer so it is 1 inch longer overall from the other spring.

So,     Which one is correct?   Or are they both wrong?

Thanks
Dan

Had a little of similar problem. Both coils need to be same length. Hard to adjust difference out. Changes the geometry . If you try to use them or change them you need to make sure the metal stops are welded between hinges at the top, so as to not let the "scissor affect" close with springs on the hinges. Hinges need as much pressure on them as you can get.  Just enough to hold hood up. If not , Hood will have unneeded pressure on 1 side and will pull down sideways.  . Done this since the 60's. had many a hood off. ;)  Good luck

I counted the coils on SMS's picture of the '73 - '74 and came up with 19.
